Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and make some relevant comparisons, including that café visits are high in several cities and fresh-coffee purchases are below 45% everywhere. However, the overview is unclear and some claims are inaccurate: instant coffee is not highest in only the three cities named, since Adelaide is also at about 50%, while the café figure is highest in Melbourne and Hobart, not simply “above 60%” in Hobart alone. The statement that people prefer café visits over both types of coffee purchases is not true in every city. You also provide few precise comparisons or figures. The response is 19 words below the required minimum, which further limits its coverage. Select the main highs and lows, report accurate figures, and develop the overview more clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the chart, gives a general observation, and then adds details about the three measures. This gives the reader some sense of the topic. However, ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs, and the progression is difficult to follow. For example, “The main thing” introduces a claim without explaining how it relates to the later statement about café visits, while the final sentence repeats a broad comparison rather than concluding with a clear summary. Linking words and punctuation are also used inconsistently, as in “Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and last hobart.” Group the overview separately from the details, compare the cities in a logical order, and use clear sentence boundaries and references.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, such as “percentage,” “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee,” and “café,” so the reader can identify the categories being discussed. However, the range is basic and several word choices or collocations make the meaning awkward: “the sell of Instant coffee,” “the mostly people like went to,” and “the percentage fresh coffee is very low.” There are also spelling errors, including “avarag,” “thye,” “Sudney,” and “prefar,” which reduce clarity. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “the proportion who bought instant coffee” and “the highest percentage visited a café.” Vary the language for comparisons, using terms such as “higher than,” “whereas,” and “accounted for.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to communicate several comparisons, but sentence structures are very limited and errors occur frequently. The opening, “The bar chart shows that, coffee and tea buying and drinking habits…,” has faulty punctuation and an incomplete construction; “And show the percentage” is a sentence fragment. Other examples include “Bought instant coffee in last week is higher percentage” and “The percentage of the fresh coffee is no more than 45% in the all cities,” where articles, word order, and sentence structure are not controlled. Commas and full stops are also often misplaced or missing, making some sentences hard to follow. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and simple comparison structures, for example, “The proportion buying fresh coffee was below 45% in every city.”
