Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart demonstrates the outcome of a survey about people's coffee and tea purchasing and consuming habits in five Australian cities.

Overall, the data indicates that most people of all cities except Adelaide prefer cafe for coffee over buying it wheather fresh or instant. Whereas, in all 5 cities people avoided buying fresh coffee as it illustrates the least percentage among all three ways of consuming coffee.

Firstly, approximately 63% citizens of Hobart and Melbourne went to cafe in order to drink coffee and tea. However, Sydeney was not too behind according to numbers(61%). in additon to that, the proportion was not low for instant coffee as well for Hobart as almost 55% individuals bought it which is followed by fresh coffee which showed the portion of nearly 37%. In melbourne 47% people were accounted for buying instant coffee and around 42% for fresh coffee.

Secondly, in brisbane and adelaide the portion of people who bought instant and went to cafe were almost similar individually. On the other hand both had the same percentage of people who bought fresh coffee.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and provide an overview, noting that café visits are generally the most popular option and fresh coffee purchases are usually the lowest. These are relevant main features, but the overview needs more precise qualification: fresh coffee is not the lowest in every city, since in Adelaide café visits (about 49.5%) are slightly below fresh coffee (about 34.5%)—actually fresh remains lower there too, while in Sydney fresh is below instant; clarify comparisons consistently. More importantly, the final paragraph says Brisbane and Adelaide had similar instant-buying and café figures, but this is not accurate for Brisbane (about 53% versus 55.5%) and is especially unclear for Adelaide (50% versus 49.5%). The response also omits Adelaide’s café result and gives limited comparisons across all five cities. Select and report the key contrasts more fully and accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of detail. Sequencing with “Firstly” and “Secondly” helps the reader follow the move from the higher café figures to Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the progression is not fully effective because the first detail paragraph focuses on Hobart, Sydney and Melbourne, while the second gives only a broad statement about Brisbane and Adelaide without reporting their figures. Some links are awkward or unclear, particularly “Whereas” beginning a sentence after the overview and “in addition to that” connecting the Hobart figures. Improve cohesion by grouping cities with similar patterns and using comparisons to link the data, rather than relying mainly on ordinal transitions. This would make the relationships between the figures clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “survey,” and “purchasing and consuming habits,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “the data indicates” and “individuals bought it.” However, some choices are unnatural or imprecise: “prefer cafe for coffee” is not a natural way to describe the chart, and “avoided buying fresh coffee” suggests deliberate avoidance rather than simply a lower percentage. Spelling errors such as “wheather,” “Sydeney,” and “additon” also reduce accuracy. Use standard chart language such as “visited a café” and “recorded the lowest proportion,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. For example, “63% citizens” needs an article or a different construction (“63% of citizens”), and “in all 5 cities people avoided” needs clearer sentence punctuation and phrasing. The sentence beginning “Whereas” is a dependent clause used as a complete sentence, while “in addition to that” is followed by a lower-case sentence start. Capitalisation of city names is also inconsistent. Aim for complete, well-punctuated sentences and check articles, clause structure and sentence openings; this will make your range more controlled.
