Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s general subject and report figures for all five cities, so the response is relevant and includes some key data. However, the overview is inaccurate: Melbourne is not highest overall, since café visits are slightly higher in Hobart, while Adelaide is not lowest for every measure. The response also omits Brisbane’s city name and gives no clear comparison of the three habits across the cities. Some figures are close to the chart, but Adelaide’s café figure is reported as 55% rather than about 50%. To improve, give a precise overview of the main patterns—for example, café visits lead in most cities, while instant coffee is highest in Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart—and select accurate comparisons to support it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an opening, an overview and body paragraphs, and the city-by-city approach gives the reader some structure. However, progression is difficult to follow because the overview makes a broad, unclear claim and the body moves from Sydney and Melbourne to an unnamed city before returning to Adelaide and Hobart. The linking phrases “First and foremost,” “However,” and “At least but not last” are either mechanical or do not clearly express the relationship between the information. Repeatedly listing all three measures also makes the report feel like a sequence of figures rather than a comparison. Organise the body into clearer groups, such as cities with higher café attendance and those with higher instant-coffee purchases, and use concise links that show the comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “proportion,” “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee” and “café,” and the reader can generally identify the measures being described. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated almost verbatim, especially “the percentage of … in last 4 weeks.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “results of a visited” and “highest percentage … of coffee and tea buying and drinking habits.” Spelling and form errors, including “sydeny” and “ta,” also reduce precision. Use concise reporting language and vary it appropriately: for example, “the share of residents who bought…” or “café attendance reached…”. Check city names and use the chart’s category labels consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts longer sentences and uses basic sequencing, but grammatical control is weak and errors frequently make the wording awkward. The opening, “The bar graph illustrate,” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the proportion of bought fresh coffee” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. Articles and prepositions are often missing or misplaced, as in “in the sydeny” and “went ta a cafe.” Several sentences join multiple figures with repeated “and” without a clear grammatical structure, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent. These problems sometimes obscure the intended comparison. Practise accurate simple reporting clauses first—such as “In Sydney, 44% bought fresh coffee”—then combine them with controlled comparative structures like “whereas” and “compared with.”
