IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the results of a survey about people’s coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five Australian cities.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration here shows the consumption of tea and coffee along with the purchase of it among five Australian cities.
The comparison of the consumption and purchase is among the 5 cities of Australia which are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart. Among these five cities the highest percentage of residents prefer to go to a cafe and get their coffee or tea which is about 55% to 65%. However about 45% to 55% of the population of these cities prefer buying instant coffee and prepare it at their residance. Lastly about 35% to 45% of the population chose to buy fresh coffee from the market where people of Brisbane and Adelaid do not prefer buying fresh coffee much.
Overall we can say that the highest consumption and purchase of tea or coffee in last 4 weeks is from a cafe and the least preffered option has to be freshly bought coffee for the population of these five cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the three activities and compare their broad levels across the five cities. Your overview that café visits are generally the most popular and fresh coffee purchases the least popular is supported by the chart overall. The approximate ranges you give are also broadly accurate. However, the response does not report specific city-by-city figures or clearly identify key exceptions: for example, café visits are slightly lower than instant-coffee purchases in Adelaide, and fresh coffee is not the least popular option there. The claim that residents “prefer” these options also goes beyond what a survey of recent behaviour establishes. To strengthen the response, select a few precise comparisons and describe the main variation between cities, rather than relying mainly on general ranges.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: it introduces the chart, gives a general comparison, and ends with a summary. The sequence from café visits to instant and fresh coffee is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Lastly” help signal the progression. However, the second paragraph repeats the introductory point about the five cities, while the final paragraph largely restates the earlier overview instead of adding a distinct conclusion. The comparisons would be clearer if grouped by notable patterns or city differences, with more explicit links between the figures. Some transitions feel mechanical, and the relationship between the broad ranges and the specific cities is not always clear. Organising the body around the highest and lowest results would improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing the chart, including “percentage,” “population,” “buying instant coffee,” and “fresh coffee.” This is adequate for the task, and the reader can understand the main comparisons. However, several choices are imprecise or repetitive: “consumption and purchase” is repeated, although the chart distinguishes purchases from café visits, and “prefer” suggests a preference rather than reporting what residents did. “Get their coffee or tea” is also informal for an academic summary. There are spelling errors in “residance,” “Adelaid,” and “preffered,” and “freshly bought coffee” is an awkward phrase. Use more precise terms such as “visited a café” and “purchased fresh coffee,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex sentence beginning “Among these five cities” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions limit accuracy. For example, “The comparison … is among the 5 cities” is an unnatural sentence structure, and “the highest percentage of residents prefer” has a mismatch between the singular subject “percentage” and the plural verb. In “the least preffered option has to be freshly bought coffee,” the phrasing also makes the conclusion less controlled. The response relies heavily on similar sentence patterns and does not consistently use accurate comparative structures. Practise forming direct sentences with clear subjects, such as “Café attendance was highest in…,” and check agreement and article use.
