Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and mention several relevant comparisons, including café visits being high in Melbourne and Hobart and instant coffee being popular in Hobart. However, the overview is unclear and does not accurately summarise the main pattern: café visits were highest in Melbourne and Hobart, while fresh coffee was generally the least-purchased category. Some figures and comparisons are also misreported. For example, Melbourne’s café figure is described as about 63%, but the same figure is incorrectly assigned to instant coffee; its instant-coffee result was about 49%. Sydney’s fresh-coffee figure is given as 40% rather than about 44%. To improve, select the key highs and lows, report each series accurately, and make the overview a clear summary of the chart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has separate paragraphs for an introduction, overview, and city-by-city details, so there is some basic organisation. However, progression is difficult to follow because comparisons shift abruptly and some sentences combine unrelated points. For instance, the Melbourne sentence moves from fresh coffee to instant coffee and then calls the latter the highest, although the café figure appears to be intended. The final paragraph also moves between Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart without a clear comparison structure. Linking phrases such as “in contrast” are attempted, but are not always used to clarify the relationship between figures. Grouping information by category or by clear city comparisons, and using accurate references such as “this figure” only when the referent is unmistakable, would make the report easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee,” and “went to a café,” which makes the topic recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice and spelling problems reduce clarity: “famous in people” is not a natural way to describe popularity, while “steady growth” suggests change over time rather than a comparison between cities. There are also repeated misspellings such as “coffe,” “Syney,” and “ot,” alongside awkward phrases such as “higher trend.” Aim for precise reporting language and check spelling carefully. Phrases such as “accounted for,” “was the most popular,” and “a similar proportion” would help express comparisons more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the reader can generally identify the cities and categories being discussed. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with frequent errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation. Examples include “Melbourne is on the top people went to cafe,” which joins clauses without a clear grammatical link, and “Brisbane and Adelaide is steady growth,” where the subject and verb do not agree and the sentence lacks a complete structure. The sentence beginning “In Sydney, people Bought…” also has inconsistent capitalisation and an awkward clause pattern. Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles and agreement—for example, “The proportion in Brisbane and Adelaide was similar.”
