Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and include an overview, noting that café visits are generally the leading activity and fresh-coffee purchases are often lower. You also report figures for all five cities, so the response is relevant and covers the main categories. However, several comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: for Sydney, fresh coffee is about 44%, not 48%; in Brisbane, instant coffee is about 53%, not fresh coffee; and Adelaide’s café figure is about 50%, rather than being clearly distinguished from instant coffee. The overview also overgeneralises: café visits are not highest in Sydney, and fresh coffee is not the lowest activity in every city. Select the key highs, lows and exceptions more accurately, then support the overview with clear comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, with the cities grouped in a broadly understandable order. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand” and “It is apparently seen” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, progression is weakened by repeated, lengthy patterns such as “the ratio of people’s who went to…” and by unclear references, including “his ratio” and “his were both.” The final sentence also combines several Hobart figures in a way that makes the comparisons difficult to follow. Organise the details into shorter, parallel comparisons—for example, compare the three activities for each city using consistent labels—and use linking words only where they clarify a contrast.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “percentage,” “survey,” and the activity labels, and you attempt to describe rankings with phrases such as “highest percentage” and “lowest position.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the intended meaning difficult to interpret. Examples include “ratio of people’s,” “went to bought,” “dominant position,” and “in last 4 year.” There are also spelling errors in city names and key words, such as “Adelade,” “Brisbanne” and “fesh.” Use the chart’s own precise terms—“proportion of residents,” “bought fresh coffee,” and “visited a café”—and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt longer sentences and use basic structures to introduce the chart and describe comparisons, but control is inconsistent. Errors in agreement and sentence construction recur, as in “the ratio … were stand” and “his ratio almost 62%,” while “the ratio of people’s who…” shows problems with noun phrases and relative clauses. Several sentences join many figures without a clear grammatical structure, particularly the final sentence about Hobart. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, including city names and spacing around commas. Practise accurate simple comparison patterns first, such as “The proportion who visited a café was about 62%,” then vary them with controlled clauses. Clear sentence boundaries and consistent subject–verb agreement would make the data easier to understand.
