Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the topic and names the five cities, but it does not accurately report the chart’s main features, which is why the account is only minimally successful. The overview claims that residents bought more fresh coffee than instant coffee and that café visits were the least common activity; in fact, café attendance is the highest figure in every city except Adelaide, while instant coffee exceeds fresh coffee in all five. Several figures are also assigned to the wrong categories or cities: for example, Melbourne’s fresh-coffee figure is about 42.5%, not 62%, and its café figure is about 63.5%, not 44%. To improve, give a correct overview first, then select a few accurate comparisons supported by figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response into an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the city names help establish the subject. However, the information does not progress clearly: the second paragraph gives broad claims, while the next mixes figures for different cities and activities, making comparisons difficult to follow. Phrases such as “Bought fresh coffee in last weeks in mekbourne 64%” do not clearly show which data point is being reported. The conclusion repeats a general claim rather than summarising the chart’s actual pattern. Use one paragraph for the overview and group the details by activity or by clear city comparisons; use linking phrases only where they clarify those relationships.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “city residents,” “instant coffee,” “fresh coffee” and “percentage,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, vocabulary is repetitive and several spelling and word-choice errors reduce clarity, such as “graps,” “illustruted,” “istant,” “cooffee” and “persentage.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, including “five coutry,” “best selling” and “slightly simmilar percantage.” Aim for accurate chart language and consistent spelling. Useful alternatives include “the proportion of residents,” “visited a café,” and “was higher than,” which allow comparisons to be expressed more precisely without repeating “percentage” or “bought.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple statements and longer comparisons, and its paragraphing gives some sentence-level structure. However, grammatical control is weak and errors often make the intended relationships unclear. Examples include “people use to buy more fresh coffee,” where the verb form and tense are unsuitable, and “In this five coutry,” which has problems with number and sentence construction. Agreement and articles are also inconsistent in “every countrt have different different persentage.” Several clauses are joined or punctuated awkwardly, particularly in the long sequence of figures in the third paragraph. Practise accurate past-tense reporting, singular and plural agreement, and complete sentences; then check that each sentence clearly identifies the city, activity and figure.
