Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates the outcomes of a survey in five Australian cities where individuals have different habits drinking and buying tea and coffee.
Overall, it is clear that some countries have similar habits of buying and drinking coffee, while, two countries have noticable changes in their percentages.
In sydeny and melbourne the proportionate buying rate is similar at 45% approximately. In both cities individuals went to a cafe for coffee and tea in last 4 weeks and the percentage of city residents was at 60% in sydeny and 63% in melbourne respectively. On the other hand, brisbane also experienced similar trends in both habits. People in brisbane bought fresh coffee at the rate of 34% as well as they bought instant coffee at the percenatge of 53% which was almost to the equal of citizens who went to a cafe.
Furthermore, Hobart and adaelaide has two different rates. Adelaide percentage was different from other four cities. As compare to hobart, adelaide has a significant fall in fresh coffee buyers at 34%, while, hobart has a minimum increase in fresh coffee buyers at 38%. In addition, city residencence percentage remain stable on people who bought instant coffee and went to a cafe. Hobart has similar trends as other cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the chart’s subject and include several relevant comparisons, such as café attendance being high in Melbourne and Hobart and fresh-coffee buying being lower in Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: “some countries” should refer to cities, and the claim that two cities show “noticeable changes” does not describe a clear overall pattern. Several details are misreported or too vague. For example, Sydney and Melbourne’s fresh-coffee figures are not both approximately 45%, and Adelaide’s instant-coffee and café figures are not stable or similar. The response also omits the key overall pattern that café visits are the highest category in four cities, while instant coffee leads in Brisbane. Select the main trends accurately and support them with clear comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to comparisons between groups of cities. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” and “Furthermore” help signal shifts. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the overview is vague, and the grouping of Sydney/Melbourne, Brisbane, then Hobart/Adelaide does not establish a clear comparison framework. Some links are inaccurate or awkward, as in “As compare to hobart,” and the final sentence, “Hobart has similar trends as other cities,” does not specify which trends. Improve cohesion by organising the body around the three survey categories or by comparing the highest and lowest city figures, and use references that make each comparison explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “rate,” “significant fall,” and “similar trends,” so the chart’s general subject is usually understandable. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “percentage” throughout. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “countries” for cities, “buying rate,” and “minimum increase,” which make some comparisons difficult to interpret. Spelling errors such as “sydeny,” “noticable,” “percenatge,” and “adaelaide” also reduce precision. Aim for standard chart language and accurate collocations: for example, describe the “proportion of residents who bought” each type of coffee, and use “lowest figure” or “slight increase” only when the data supports it.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “as well as,” and the main message can generally be followed. However, errors in sentence structure and agreement recur. For example, “Hobart and adaelaide has” needs a plural verb, while “People in brisbane bought fresh coffee … as well as they bought instant coffee” is not correctly joined. The sentence beginning “In both cities individuals went to a cafe…” also has an unclear construction, and “city residencence percentage remain stable on people” lacks a grammatical relationship between its ideas. Use complete, direct comparisons, check subject–verb agreement, and punctuate introductory phrases and clauses carefully. More accurate control of these patterns would make your comparisons easier to understand.
