Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the chart’s general subject and attempt an overview, but the main features are not reported accurately or clearly enough. For example, you say Melbourne and Hobart had the highest café figures, which is broadly correct, but then describe Brisbane as having the lowest café figure; Adelaide is lower. The claim that Brisbane had the lowest instant-coffee buying is also incorrect: Sydney is lowest, while Hobart is highest. The fresh-coffee comparison is unclear and does not report the actual pattern. The response is also 30 words below the required minimum, leaving too little space to select and explain key comparisons. Include a clear overview and accurate comparisons across all three categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an overview followed by two body sections, and phrases such as “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “However” signal relationships. However, progression is difficult to follow because the categories are mixed together and some statements are incomplete or contradictory. For instance, the café paragraph moves from Melbourne and Hobart to “60%” and then to Brisbane without a clear comparison, while “second” introduces fresh coffee but also mentions tea. The unfinished line break after “compared to the” further interrupts the flow. Group the information by category or by clear comparisons, and use linking phrases only where the relationship between figures is explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “bar graph,” “percentage,” “highest,” “lowest,” and “last 4 week,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is basic and several word choices or collocations make the meaning difficult to understand. Examples include “people which is tea and coffee buying,” “prefer for went to the cafe,” and “fresh coffee and tea people higher drink.” There are also frequent spelling errors, such as “simmlearty,” “brisbance,” “syden,” and “melbourn.” Use precise reporting language such as “the proportion of residents who visited a café” and check spelling carefully. Avoid adding “tea” to a category that the chart labels as fresh coffee.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts a few different sentence forms, including an overview and contrast clauses, but control of basic sentence structure is inconsistent. The opening, “The bar graph provide information,” has subject–verb disagreement, and “Overall, people prefer for went to the cafe” does not form a grammatical clause. Other examples include “it highest simmlearty both cities” and “when Sydney fall significantly in fresh coffee,” where missing verbs or incorrect verb forms obscure the intended meaning. Articles, plurals, and punctuation are also unreliable, as in “five Australia cities” and the fragmented “compared to the.” Build accurate simple sentences first, then add comparisons using controlled clauses such as “whereas” and “while.”
