Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and reports a few relevant figures, including the low fresh-coffee proportions in Brisbane and Adelaide and Sydney’s figure. However, it covers only a small part of the information: it gives no overview of the main patterns across all three categories and omits instant-coffee purchases and café visits entirely. The Brisbane and Adelaide figures are also slightly understated compared with the chart, though the difference is small. The required minimum of 150 words is not met; at 56 words, the response is substantially short, which leaves the task largely incomplete. To improve, provide a clear overview and compare the highest and lowest results across the cities and categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence introduces the survey, followed by a separate attempt at an overview and a data statement. The reference to Brisbane and Adelaide also groups two cities with similar results. However, the response stops before developing a logical account of the chart, and the standalone “overall,” does not lead into a complete overview. There is little progression between ideas and no meaningful use of linking or comparison language. Use separate paragraphs for an introduction, overview and key comparisons, and connect details with phrases such as “by contrast” or “whereas” so the reader can follow the relationships between categories and cities.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “survey,” “residents,” “bought fresh coffee” and “percentage,” so the basic subject is understandable. However, the range is narrow and several expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “outcomes of a survey” and “related to the individual's coffee and tea buying and comsumption habits.” The spelling error in “comsumption” also reduces accuracy. More precise chart language would help describe the data and comparisons, for example “proportion of residents,” “purchased instant coffee” and “visited a café.” Aim to use a wider set of accurate reporting verbs and comparison terms rather than repeating general wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response shows some control of basic sentence construction: the opening sentence communicates the chart’s subject, and the clause beginning “which was the lowest percentage” attempts to add information. However, the range is limited, with little variation beyond simple statements. There are errors in articles and sentence boundaries, as in “in last 4 weeks,” and the lowercase “overall” begins a new sentence without appropriate capitalisation. The final “sydney had 45%” is also a fragment-like, underdeveloped statement because it does not specify what the percentage measures. Practise complete sentences with accurate articles and punctuation, and vary structures to compare the chart’s categories clearly.
