Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify relevant categories and make a useful overall comparison: café visits are highest in Melbourne, while fresh-coffee purchases are lowest in Brisbane. Several figures for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide are broadly consistent with the chart. However, the overview is incomplete and one comparison is inaccurate: Brisbane, not Adelaide, has the lowest café figure, while Adelaide has the lowest fresh-coffee figure jointly with Brisbane. The response also stops during the Adelaide description, so Hobart is not reported and the comparison across all five cities is unfinished. To strengthen the report, give a complete overview of the main patterns, cover every city, and check that each superlative and comparison matches the data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has an identifiable introduction, overview and city-based body paragraphs, and phrases such as “To begin with,” “Compared with Melbourne” and “In addition” show an attempt to connect information. However, progression is difficult to follow because the report moves through cities without a consistent comparison plan, and several linking words do not express the relationship clearly. For example, “However” introduces figures that are simply additional Sydney data, while “it decreased also individuals” makes the Brisbane comparison hard to understand. The final sentence breaks off at “went to a,” leaving the Adelaide section incomplete. Organise the body by comparing the same categories across cities, use reference words precisely, and ensure each paragraph and sentence is complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough task-related vocabulary to identify the chart’s categories, including “percentage,” “residents,” “bought instant coffee” and “went to a cafe.” Some variation is attempted through “rose,” “declined” and “similar.” However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning awkward: “45% percentage” is redundant, “percentage of them” is imprecise, and “people who bought instant coffee … grown” uses an unsuitable word. Spelling errors such as “coffe” also recur. Use concise, accurate reporting language and check spelling; for example, refer to “the proportion of residents” and say that a figure “rose to” or “stood at” a value.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some complex sentences, including clauses beginning “who went to a cafe” and comparisons introduced by “Compared with Melbourne.” Nevertheless, errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships difficult to interpret. The opening phrase “residents who buying” has an incorrect verb form, and “Brisbane was city, whose percentage … declined” is missing an article and has an unclear clause structure. In “it decreased also individuals,” the sentence construction is faulty; “people … grown” also lacks the correct verb form. The final sentence is incomplete. Practise building clear subject–verb sentences first, then add relative clauses and comparisons, checking articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries.
