Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the chart topic and includes some relevant figures, such as café visits in Sydney and Melbourne and instant-coffee purchases in Brisbane and Adelaide. However, it does not provide a reliable overview of the main patterns: the claim that Melbourne has the highest overall percentage is unclear, and Adelaide is not lowest for every activity. Several figures or labels are also inaccurate or confused. For example, Sydney’s fresh and instant coffee figures are reversed, and the sentence about Melbourne repeats café information without clearly naming the city. Hobart’s café figure is reported, but its coffee-purchase results are omitted. The response is also one word below the required minimum. A clear overview and accurate comparisons across all three categories are needed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and overview before giving city-specific details. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the body moves abruptly from Sydney to an unnamed city, then Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart. The repeated phrase “In last 4 weeks” does not clearly connect the information, and “while” is used in places where the relationship between figures is unclear. Some comparisons are placed together, but the reader must infer which city or category is being discussed. Use separate, logically grouped paragraphs—for example, one comparing café visits and another comparing fresh and instant coffee—and use clear city references to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “bar graph,” “percentage,” “residents,” and “bought fresh coffee,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning unclear. “People’s coffee and tea buying amd drinking habits” contains a spelling error and an awkward phrase, while “went to cafe to drank coffee” is not a natural expression. “Australian citizen” is also imprecise when describing residents of Hobart. Aim for accurate, consistent terms such as “proportion of residents,” “purchased instant coffee,” and “visited a café for coffee or tea.” Check spelling carefully, especially “instant” and “Hobart.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including an overview with “while” and comparisons using “respectively.” However, errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement and punctuation are frequent enough to make some statements difficult to interpret. For example, “The bar graph illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, and “went to cafe to drank coffee” combines an incorrect verb form with an incomplete article pattern. The overview’s construction, “percentage of city residents bought tea or coffee and drinking habits was highest,” is also grammatically unclear. Commas and spacing around punctuation are inconsistent. Practise building clear comparison sentences with a subject and verb, and check agreement, articles and verb forms before submitting.
