Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the three activities and make a relevant general observation that café visits are high in several cities. However, the response does not provide a clear, accurate overview of the main patterns, and several figures are misreported. Most notably, Adelaide’s fresh-coffee figure is given as about 49%, although it is approximately 34.5%; the café figure is about 49.5%, not 35%. The claim that people in all five cities are more likely to visit cafés is also too broad: in Adelaide, instant coffee purchases are slightly higher than café visits. Comparisons are mostly limited to repeating figures city by city. To improve, summarise the overall highs and lows, then select accurate comparisons across cities and categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response follows a recognisable city-by-city order, so readers can generally tell which location is being discussed. It also uses basic linking expressions such as “while,” “as a result” and “in conclusion.” However, the repeated opening “According to chart” makes the organisation mechanical, and the paragraphs do not build towards a clear overview of the data. Some transitions are awkward or unclear, particularly “as percentage for the instant coffee,” and the Brisbane and Adelaide sections run together without a space or clear paragraph break. Grouping the information by activity or presenting an overview before selected comparisons would create a more logical progression and make the relationships between figures easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the basic subject, including “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee,” “residents” and “cafe.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “buying a coffee or tea in cafe” and “more coffee or tea lover.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Approximetialy” and “cofe,” which reduce the accuracy of the writing. Some word combinations do not sound natural, for example “residents of Brisbane is more likely.” Aim for precise chart-reporting language and vary expressions for proportions and comparisons. Check spelling carefully and use standard terms such as “visited a café” rather than repeatedly describing people as buying drinks there.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts longer sentences using “while” and “as a result,” but most sentence patterns are repetitive, and complex constructions are often faulty. For example, “residents of Sydney has more went” has incorrect subject–verb agreement and verb form, while “the residents of Brisbane is more likely” also has an agreement error. Articles and sentence structure are problematic in phrases such as “in cafe” and “the percentage for buying the instant coffee is about to buy is 53%.” Punctuation spacing is inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and spaces before commas. These errors sometimes make the intended comparison difficult to follow. Practise accurate simple comparison sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses using “whereas” or “compared with.”
