Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the chart’s subject and mentions several relevant comparisons, including that café visits are highest in Hobart and that fresh-coffee buying is relatively low in Brisbane. However, it does not provide a clear, accurate overview of the main patterns: café visits are highest in Melbourne and Hobart, while instant coffee is the most popular category in most cities. The claim that Sydney has the highest fresh-coffee figure is incorrect; Sydney is only slightly above Melbourne, and both exceed the other cities. The statements about Hobart having the largest population and Adelaide the smallest are unsupported because the chart shows percentages, not population sizes. The response is also 4 words below the 150-word minimum, with 11 prompt words excluded from the count. Include a concise overview and accurate data comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic attempt to move from an introduction to comparisons and then a concluding statement, and phrases such as “According to this chart” and “So” signal relationships between ideas. However, the response does not develop a clear progression through the chart’s three categories. The paragraphing and spacing do not create meaningful sections, and several sentences repeat that the chart or paragraph makes information easy to see rather than adding data. References such as “this paragraph” are unclear because the visual is a chart, while “those cities mentioned” does not lead smoothly into the analysis. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview of the main patterns, and focused comparisons, using clear links between categories and cities.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “ratio,” “percentage,” “fresh coffee,” and “cafe,” so the reader can recognise the general topic. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a bar chart. “Building column like structure” does not clearly name the visual, “buying or selling cities” misrepresents the data, and “population” is used where the chart reports proportions of residents. There are also spelling errors in words such as “precentage,” “conculde,” “coffe,” and city names. Use precise chart language and check spelling; for example, describe the “proportion of residents” who “bought instant coffee” or “visited a café.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple statements and longer constructions, such as “Although those cities mentioned in this chart…” and “According to this chart…,” but control is inconsistent. Several sentences lack a complete or well-formed structure, including the opening sentence, which runs together without clear punctuation, and “Brisbane city have a last number,” where the subject–verb relationship is faulty. Agreement and article use are also problematic in “the population of a city Hobart are more higher,” and the final sentence is difficult to follow because its clauses are not clearly connected. Full stops and commas are often missing, making sentence boundaries unclear. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then combine them with controlled clauses using “while” or “whereas.”
