Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart illustrates the percentages of the people's buying and drinking habits of coffee and tea in five Australian cities such as, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Hobart. The bar chart compares the percentile of residents of the cities who bought fresh coffee, instant coffee or went to a cafe for a coffee or tea in the last 4 weeks.
Overall, purchasing coffee or tea at the cafe is motly done by the residents, whereas, buying fresh coffee is the least popular. It was evident that only in the city of Adelaide was the proportion that buying instant coffee is a little bit higher that those who visit the cafe.
Tha chart depicts that Melbourne and Hobart has the most percentages of people who drop by the cafe to drink coffee or tea, with both 63% of city residents; follwed by Sydney with 62%. While the average of people who bought instant coffee has the highest of approximately 59% in Hobart, and has the highest among the 5 cities. And the least city who bought instant coffee is Sydney with 46%.
On the other hand, buying fresh coffee, being the least popular among the three, has the highest percentage in Sydney, with 44% of city residents, and the lowest in Brisbane and Adelaide with both 34%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern that café visits are generally the most popular activity and fresh coffee purchases the least popular, and you support this with relevant city comparisons. The figures for fresh coffee are broadly accurate, as are the café figures for Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney. However, the overview needs more precise qualification: café visits are not highest in both Melbourne and Hobart, since Melbourne is slightly ahead, and Adelaide is the only city where instant coffee purchases exceed café visits. The claim that Hobart’s instant-coffee figure is “approximately 59%” is a notable overestimate; it is about 55%. Your final statement that fresh coffee is least prioritised in every city is also too broad, because in Adelaide café visits are slightly lower. These inaccuracies and unevenly developed comparisons limit the report’s precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, two paragraphs comparing the data, and a concluding statement. This makes the information easy to locate, and transitions such as “On the other hand” help signal a change of focus. However, some links are mechanical or do not clarify the relationship between ideas. For example, “While the average of people who bought instant coffee…” is left as a fragment-like contrast, and the sentence about Hobart’s instant-coffee figure repeats “highest” without a clear comparison. The conclusion also restates earlier points rather than adding a concise synthesis. To strengthen progression, group the three activities more systematically and use explicit comparisons between cities and categories.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “percentages,” “proportion,” “residents,” and “popular,” so the reader can follow the subject. There is also some attempt to vary wording, for example “drop by the cafe” and “prioritize.” However, several choices are inaccurate or too informal for a data report: “percentile” is not the right term for a percentage, “drop by” is conversational, and “the average … has the highest” does not express the intended comparison clearly. Spelling errors such as “motly,” “follwed,” and “Tha” also reduce control. Aim for precise chart language and reliable collocations, such as “the proportion of residents who visited a café” and “the figure for instant coffee purchases.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “whereas” and “with,” and the main message is generally understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “the lowest in Brisbane and Adelaide with both 34%.” However, there are several errors in agreement, clause construction and comparison. For example, “Melbourne and Hobart has” should use a plural verb, while “the proportion that buying instant coffee is” needs a correctly formed clause. “While the average … has the highest” is not a complete, well-formed comparison, and “the residents least prioritize buying fresh coffee in …” has an unclear grammatical relationship between the residents and the activity. Review subject–verb agreement and build comparisons with complete clauses.
