Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given chart illustrates the information regarding the survey been done about the people's two habits of buying of instant coffee and drinking tea or coffee in cafe in the cities of Australia such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart in the last 4 weeks.

Overall, in most of the cities going to cafe and drinking the tea or coffee is given much preference than just buying it. In Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and Brisbane going to cafe has been more common by the people in the last 4 weeks. Melboune has high ratio of people going to cafe's with a bit lower than 65%. While in Hobart and Sydney around 60% or above have visited the cafe's for taking the coffee or tea in the last 4 weeks. While Adelaide has below than 50% of residents visiting cafe's for drinking of tea or coffee.

On the other hand, buying instant coffee has also been not gone unnoticed as large number of people of city in Hobart and Brisbane around below 55% of instant coffee was bought in the last four weeks and 50% in Adelaine. Above 45% of residents of Melbourne and Sydney have bought instant coffee.

The people of all these five cities of Australia have not shown good interest in buying fresh coffee because each city have lower than 45% of purchasing ratio while Brisbane and Adelaine having the most lowest purchase ratio approximately below 35%.

From the given chart we can finally say that in the last 4 weeks people consistently have shown great interest in going to cafes and drink tea or coffee directly rather than buying it and making it by their own.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern: café visits were generally more popular than buying fresh coffee, and you highlight Adelaide as the exception to the café trend. Your comparisons for Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney are broadly consistent with the chart. This meets the task well, with some features reported clearly, but other details are less fully developed. For example, the overview says café-going was more common in Brisbane, although its figure (about 55.5%) is only slightly above instant-coffee purchases (about 53%); Adelaide’s café figure is also close to instant coffee, not simply a contrast with buying. The fresh-coffee figures are summarised accurately as below 45%, but the response would be stronger with a clearer comparison of the highest and lowest values across all three categories and more precise reporting of the Brisbane and Adelaide patterns.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate discussion of instant and fresh coffee. This helps the reader follow the main categories, and phrases such as “On the other hand” signal a shift in focus. However, progression is sometimes weakened by repetition: the preference for cafés is stated in both the overview and the conclusion, while the final paragraph adds little new information. Some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly the repeated use of “While” to begin statements and the long overview sentence listing several cities. Grouping the cities by comparable results, then using clear references such as “this figure” or “the proportion,” would make the comparisons flow more naturally and reduce repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing the chart, including “ratio,” “purchase,” “residents,” and “interest,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “the survey been done,” “given much preference,” “high ratio,” and “buying fresh coffee.” Repetition of “people,” “coffee,” and “last 4 weeks” also limits flexibility. There are spelling errors in “Melboune” and “Adelaine,” and “cafe's” is incorrectly formed when you mean the plural “cafés.” Aim for standard chart language such as “the proportion of residents,” “visited a café,” and “purchased fresh coffee.” More accurate collocations and spelling would make the report clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons and clauses introduced by “while,” so there is some structural variety. However, control is inconsistent, and several errors make sentences awkward or difficult to process. For example, “the survey been done” lacks the correct verb form, “each city have” has subject–verb disagreement, and “in the last 4 weeks people consistently have shown” uses an awkward tense and word order. The sentence beginning “On the other hand” also contains a faulty construction: “around below 55% of instant coffee was bought.” Articles, plurals and punctuation need attention as well. Practise building accurate comparison sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “The proportion who visited cafés was higher than the proportion who bought fresh coffee.”
