Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and make some relevant comparisons, including that Hobart has the highest instant-coffee figure and that café visits are generally high. However, the response addresses the task only minimally because it does not give a clear, accurate overview of the main patterns across all three categories. Several comparisons are incorrect: Sydney, not Brisbane, has the highest fresh-coffee figure, while Brisbane and Adelaide are joint lowest; Melbourne, not Brisbane, has the second-highest instant-coffee figure. The claim that Hobart is an “average” city for both coffee types is also unclear and unsupported. Report the broad pattern first—for example, café visits lead in most cities, while instant coffee exceeds fresh coffee everywhere—and then select accurate comparisons to support it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has some organisation: it introduces the chart and then discusses fresh coffee and instant coffee, using connectors such as “Moreover” and “In addition.” However, the ideas do not progress clearly from an overview to well-selected details, and the same comparison pattern is repeated without a consistent structure. The opening sentence is difficult to follow, and the final sentence adds another ranking without linking it clearly to the earlier points. Paragraphing is absent, so the different categories and comparisons run together. A clearer sequence would be an introduction, a short overview of the main trends, and separate detail paragraphs comparing the cities. Use linking phrases to show meaningful contrasts rather than simply adding another statement.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “highest,” “lowest,” “bought,” and “comparison,” so the reader can recognise the topic and intended comparisons. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, such as “city who buy Instant coffee” and “percentage of drinkers who bought instant coffee the city was Hobert.” Some word choices make the meaning difficult to interpret, particularly “fresh coffee bought into the cafe,” which confuses purchasing coffee with visiting a café. Spelling errors such as “Hobert,” “tne,” and “secound” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of chart expressions, such as “the proportion of residents,” “recorded the highest figure,” and “visited a café.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, but the range is limited and complex attempts are often faulty. For example, “Bar graph shows percentage of a detailed summary” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “the highest percentage of drinkers who bought instant coffee the city was Hobert” is missing a linking verb or suitable clause structure. Subject–verb agreement and verb forms are also inconsistent, as in “individuals drinks” and “the city was … is Sydney.” Articles, plurals, and punctuation are frequently inaccurate, including the opening “Bar graph” and the list of city names in parentheses. Practise building accurate comparison sentences, such as “Hobart had the highest proportion of residents buying instant coffee,” before attempting longer sentences.
