Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the topic and attempts to compare the five cities, but it reports the chart inaccurately and does not provide a reliable overview of its main features. For example, it says Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart had fresh-coffee figures above 60%, when these are about 44%, 42.5% and 38.5%; the figures above 60% refer to café visits. It also reverses or misstates several comparisons, including describing Brisbane and Adelaide as having fresh-coffee rates of 49–51%. A relevant feature is that café visits are highest in Melbourne and Hobart, while fresh coffee is lower than instant coffee in every city. Focus on accurate, clearly selected comparisons and distinguish the three chart categories throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some attempt to organise the response: the opening introduces the subject, and later sentences contrast three cities with Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the ideas do not progress clearly from an overview to accurate supporting details. Repeated openings such as “The given pie chart” make the response feel repetitive, and connectors including “On the other hand” and “BUT” do not clarify the comparisons because the figures and categories are confused. The long sentences also combine several claims, making relationships difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and key comparisons, and group information by measure or by city. Clear references to “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee” and “café visits” would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “buying habits,” “ratio,” “higher” and “less,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear: “the greater bought of fresh coffee,” “less bought,” and “people how went to cafe” are not natural ways to describe survey proportions. There are also spelling errors in “Auatralian,” “Adelaida” and “holbart,” and “pie chart” misidentifies the visual. Use precise chart language such as “proportion,” “percentage,” “recorded” and “visited a café,” and check spelling of city names and chart types.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts longer sentences and comparisons, but its grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make the intended relationships hard to understand. For instance, “The given pie chart illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, while “The given pie chart shown” uses an incorrect verb form. Articles and plural forms are also unreliable in phrases such as “in last 4 week” and “went to a cafe for a coffee or a tea.” Several sentences are joined into long structures without clear punctuation, including the sentence beginning “The given pie chart shows the ration.” Practise accurate simple comparison sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses; check agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries.
