Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the chart’s subject and make an attempt at an overview by noting café visits are generally the highest category and fresh coffee purchases are often lower. However, the overview is not consistently accurate: fresh coffee is not the lowest category in every city, and Hobart is not “number 1” across all measures. The comparison claiming Brisbane has the maximum café attendance over Adelaide is also misleading; Adelaide is lower, but Brisbane is not the highest overall. Several key patterns are omitted, especially that café visits peak in Melbourne and Hobart, while instant coffee is highest in Hobart. To improve, give a precise overview and compare the main highs and lows across all five cities, supporting these with accurate figures. Eleven words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the length count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to city comparisons, and the paragraphs generally group related information. However, progression is difficult to follow because the comparisons are selective and sometimes unclear. For example, “Brisbane to contrast with Adelaide overall, it is little bit high” does not specify which measure is being compared, and the final “To sum up” introduces a new, unsupported claim about Hobart rather than drawing together the main trends. Linking phrases such as “as compare to” and “Both” are used awkwardly or without clear reference. Organise the body by categories or by clear city groupings, and use explicit links such as “By contrast” and “In terms of café visits” to make each comparison easy to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “residents,” “bought instant coffee,” and “went to a cafe,” so the reader can usually identify the categories being discussed. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “contrast about,” “highest ratio,” “highest quantity,” and “number 1.” Repetition of “people who bought” also makes the report less precise and fluent. These choices sometimes make the intended comparison harder to understand, although the main topic remains clear. Build a more accurate set of chart-reporting expressions, including “proportion,” “share,” “recorded,” and “accounted for,” and use “higher/lower than” for direct comparisons rather than translating conversational phrases literally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer comparative sentences, but control is inconsistent and the range remains limited. Errors occur in basic sentence construction and agreement: “Overall, there is the highest ratio” lacks a clear grammatical subject, while “Brisbane have” and “Adelaide have” should use singular agreement. The sentence “Brisbane to contrast with Adelaide overall, it is little bit high” is also incomplete and difficult to parse. Articles and prepositions are often missing or incorrectly used, as in “in last 4 weeks” and “as compare to.” Sentence boundaries and capitalization need attention, particularly in “To sum up, Hobart is the number 1… just minor lower.” Practise complete subject–verb sentences and accurate comparative clauses before adding more complex structures.
