Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and attempt an overview, noting that café visits are generally high and fresh coffee purchases are comparatively low. However, the response only partially reports the data: it gives no clear figures and covers just four cities in the body, leaving Adelaide largely unexamined. The claim that café visits exceed 60% in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hobart is inaccurate for Brisbane, at about 55.5%; Adelaide is also not simply an exception to the overall pattern, as café visits are still close to half. The statement that instant coffee buying “rose up” suggests a change over time, which the chart does not show. The response is also below the required 150 words. Add a fuller comparison across all five cities and report key values accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable opening, overview and body paragraph, and it uses basic sequencing such as “Overall” and “Firstly.” These features give the reader some sense of organisation. However, the progression is limited: the body begins a comparison but does not complete it or move on to other cities and categories. The overview also combines several claims in a long sentence, making the relationships between them unclear. For example, “with most people buying instant coffee while, least number…” is difficult to follow, and “furthermore” does not introduce a clearly distinct point. Develop a clear structure: overview first, then compare café attendance and coffee purchases in grouped cities, using linking phrases only where they clarify the comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “bargraph,” “survey,” “residents,” “purchased,” and “comparatively,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing a static chart. “Travelled to cafes” does not mean visited cafés in this context, while “rose up moderately” incorrectly implies a trend over time. There are also noticeable spelling and form errors, such as “diffrent” and “respectivley,” and repeated use of “coffee” and “cities.” Choose precise chart language such as “the proportion of residents who visited cafés” and “was higher than,” and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, but control is inconsistent, especially when ideas are combined. For example, “residents … travelled to cafes for tea and coffee were comparatively more” lacks a grammatical link between the subject and the verb phrase, and “with people buying fresh/instant coffee was more than 40%” has an incorrect clause structure. Agreement and article use are also problematic in “individuals visiting cafes … are significantly higher” and “least number of city residents.” Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including “Firstly, In” and the crowded city list. Use shorter, complete sentences first, then add controlled comparisons with structures such as “The proportion who visited cafés was higher than the figures for either type of coffee purchase.”
