Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart compares coffee and tea buying and drinking habits in five major big cities of Australia. Major cities like Sydney and Melbourne are included in this bar chart.
If we look into the graph we mainly have 3 main categories. Bar chart is dealing with fresh coffee, instant coffee and going out to cafe for coffee or tea in last 4 weeks.
In these 3 major cities which include Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart around 60% of city residents went to cafe for coffe or tea in last 4 weeks compared to purchasing fresh or instant coffee.
If we talk about fresh coffee bought in last 4 weeks, again cities like Sydney and Melbourne are leading the chart with 43% and lastly we have case of instant coffee brought in last 4 weeks.Similarly, in case of instant coffee, cities like hobart and brisbane are leading the chart with around 50 to 55% of city residents purchasing coffee in last 4 weeks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the three measures and make a relevant comparison by noting that café visits were around 60% in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart. You also correctly identify Sydney and Melbourne as relatively high for fresh coffee, and Hobart and Brisbane as high for instant coffee. However, the response only partially summarises the chart: it gives little information about Adelaide and does not provide a clear overview of the main patterns across all five cities. The statement that Sydney and Melbourne are “leading” for fresh coffee is incomplete, since their figures are close and Hobart is also comparatively high. Develop the overview and report a few accurate comparisons across the full set of cities.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has some organisation: it introduces the chart, names its three categories, and then discusses café visits and coffee purchases. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is limited, and the paragraphs do not build a clear overview followed by a systematic comparison. Phrases such as “If we look into the graph” and “If we talk about” are repetitive and do not help connect the data. The final sentence also combines instant-coffee comparisons without clearly distinguishing the cities or figures. Group the information by the main trends, use clear topic sentences, and connect comparisons explicitly—for example, contrast café attendance with instant-coffee purchases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee,” “city residents,” and “purchasing,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “major big cities” is redundant, and “leading the chart” is not a natural way to describe the highest percentages. There are also spelling and form errors, including “coffe” and “brought” where “bought” is intended. Use precise terms such as “proportion,” “percentage,” and “recorded,” and vary the language used to compare values. This would make the report more concise and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and the main meaning is usually understandable. For example, the sentence beginning “In these 3 major cities” makes a comparison, while “If we talk about fresh coffee bought…” introduces another point. However, control is uneven: “Bar chart is dealing with…” lacks an article, and the opening sentence has an awkward structure. Several sentences are fragments or run together, particularly “If we talk about fresh coffee bought in last 4 weeks, again cities…” and the final sentence, where punctuation is missing around the transition. Practise complete, clearly punctuated sentences and accurate article use, while retaining some complex structures.
