Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several important comparisons in the café and instant-coffee results, including Melbourne’s highest café figure and Hobart’s highest instant-coffee figure. However, the response only partially covers the chart: it omits the fresh-coffee series entirely and gives no clear overall summary of the main pattern across all three activities. Some figures are also inaccurate: Hobart’s café result is about 63%, not 62%, and Melbourne’s instant-coffee figure is about 48.5%, not 47%; Sydney’s is about 45.5%, rather than 45%. The overview is also limited to rankings rather than summarising the broader contrast, such as café visits being highest overall and fresh coffee generally being the least popular. Cover all three categories and select the clearest overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic sequence: it first discusses café visits and then moves to instant coffee, so the reader can follow the main topic changes. However, the organisation is limited because there is no distinct overview and the information is not grouped into a clear introduction, summary, and supporting comparisons. Linking phrases such as “the second city in this list” and “after Hobart” help show rankings, but repeated list-style wording makes the progression mechanical. The final paragraph also combines several city comparisons in a long run-on sequence. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the detailed comparisons, and connect related figures with clearer contrast language such as “whereas” or “by comparison.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “percentage,” “cafe,” “instant coffee,” and “buying,” which makes the subject generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, particularly “in this list” and “had the lowest percentage.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “servey,” “percantage,” “adelaid,” and “horbt,” which reduce the accuracy and polish of the report. Some expressions are not natural for describing chart data, for example “had little low from Hobart.” Aim for concise reporting verbs and comparison phrases, and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish the three activities and describe rankings without repeating the same wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response mainly uses simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts to join ideas using “which” and “and.” These attempts are often faulty or incomplete, as in “Brisbane and Adelaide had little low from Hobart Brisbane had 52%,” where the comparison and sentence boundaries are unclear. There are frequent errors in agreement and sentence structure: “The graph … demonstrate” should use a singular verb, and “the second lowest is this list” lacks the correct preposition and a clear clause structure. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent in phrases such as “went to a cafe … in last four weeks.” Use shorter, complete sentences to report each comparison, then practise combining them accurately with “while” or “whereas.”
