Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the chart’s general subject and names the five cities, and it reports one relevant feature: Hobart had the highest proportion buying instant coffee. However, it does not summarise the main patterns or make meaningful comparisons across the three activities, and the claim about “drinking tea” misrepresents a chart that records café visits for coffee or tea as well as coffee purchases. The statement about Hobart is accurate, but it is unsupported by figures or comparison with other cities. The response is also substantially below the required 150 words, leaving most of the task unaddressed. To improve, give an overview of the café and instant-coffee patterns, compare fresh-coffee figures, and support these points with selected data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5

There is a basic attempt to move from introducing the chart to reporting a finding, with “Including” signalling a further point. The city names also establish the scope of the information. However, the response consists of two short, loosely connected paragraphs, and the second does not develop the first into a clear summary. The opening sentence is difficult to follow, so the reader cannot readily see how the chart’s subject, cities, and reported result relate. There are no clear overview and detail sections or a logical sequence of comparisons. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and a paragraph of selected comparisons; use linking phrases to show how each detail supports the overview.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The response uses a few relevant terms, including “percentage,” “cities,” and “instant coffee,” so the topic can partly be recognised. However, the vocabulary is very limited for describing a chart, and some choices are inaccurate or awkward: “drinking tea” does not accurately describe the activities shown, while “bought highest instant coffee” is not a natural way to report a proportion. There are also spelling errors in “Melboume” and “servey.” Use precise chart language such as “the proportion of residents,” “visited a café,” and “the highest percentage bought instant coffee.” A wider set of comparison terms—such as “whereas,” “by contrast,” and “approximately”—would help communicate the data more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts simple sentence forms, and the intended meaning of the city list and the Hobart finding can be partly understood. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “the chart below show us,” the singular subject requires “shows”; “the percentage beyond with 5 cities” does not form a clear grammatical relationship; and “Hobart bought highest instant coffee” incorrectly makes the city the buyer and omits the structure needed to describe a percentage. The sentences also show little variety, with no well-controlled complex structures. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete comparison sentences, for example: “Hobart had the highest proportion of residents who bought instant coffee.” Then add a second clause to compare cities.
