Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You report figures for all five cities and cover all three categories, so the response is relevant to the chart. Many figures are close to the visual data, such as Sydney’s fresh coffee figure and Hobart’s café figure. However, the response mainly lists city-by-city details and does not give a clear overview of the main patterns—for example, café visits were generally the most popular activity, while fresh coffee purchases were usually the least popular. There are also notable inaccuracies: Melbourne’s instant coffee figure is given as 53% rather than about 48.5%, and its café figure as 64% rather than about 63.5%. To strengthen the report, add a concise overview and select key comparisons rather than relying on a sequence of individual figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response follows a recognisable order, moving from Sydney through Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide to Hobart, and linking details with words such as “Furthermore,” “Additionally” and “Moreover.” This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, the organisation is largely a repeated city-by-city list, with no separate overview paragraph to establish the main trends before the details. Several transitions, including “First of all” and “Last but not least,” sound like a spoken list rather than a concise data report, and “Although” does not introduce a contrasting clause. Grouping the strongest comparisons across cities and using clear paragraphing for overview and details would create more logical progression and make the links between ideas less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee,” “bought” and “went to a cafe,” so the chart’s categories remain understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, particularly “in last 4 weeks” and “people bought.” Some word choices are imprecise for the data: “directly bought coffee or tea from the cafe” suggests a purchase, whereas the chart records people who went to a café. Spelling errors such as “Austrailia,” “illustrats,” “Adelade” and “peole” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for concise reporting language and accurate category labels; for example, use “visited a café” and “the proportion of residents” rather than repeatedly describing what people bought.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer sentences, including clauses linked with “while,” “Furthermore” and “Although,” and the reader can generally follow the intended comparisons. However, sentence structures are mostly repetitive, and many clauses omit necessary grammatical elements. For example, “43% percent fresh coffee is bought” needs a clearer structure such as “43% bought fresh coffee,” while “34% people bought” requires “34% of people.” Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent in phrases such as “went cafe” and “in last 4 weeks.” Punctuation is frequently missing after sentence openings, and the first two sentences run together. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete sentence patterns, then check articles, prepositions and sentence boundaries.
