Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the chart’s general subject and names all five cities, but it reports very few of the chart’s key findings and does not provide a clear, accurate overview. The statement that Melbourne had the highest café attendance is incorrect: Hobart and Melbourne were almost level, at about 63% and 63.5%, while Sydney was also high. The claim that Sydney residents were “attracted to” fresh coffee is not supported as a main feature; Sydney’s fresh-coffee figure was only slightly above Melbourne’s, and the response omits the overall pattern that café visits were generally the most popular activity. The answer is also 24 words below the required minimum. To improve, compare the three activities across cities and include accurate figures to support the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has separate paragraphs and a basic sequence from introducing the chart to mentioning some city habits. However, the ideas do not develop into a clear summary: the second paragraph repeats that the chart compares cities, and the final paragraph restates its general topic rather than adding a comparison or conclusion. Connections between claims are limited, so the reader has to infer how the observations relate to one another. For example, the statements about Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney are presented separately without contrasting their café, instant-coffee and fresh-coffee figures. Organise the response into an introduction, an overview of the main pattern, and a paragraph comparing relevant figures; use linking expressions to show contrasts and similarities.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the topic and basic activities, using terms such as “bar chart,” “cities,” “bought instant coffee” and “cafe.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, including repeated references to “people” and “this chart.” Some collocations are awkward: “people are also attracted to bought fresh coffee” does not express the intended survey result naturally, and “shows people’s nature” is vague and unsupported. Spelling errors such as “habbits” and “comparson” also reduce accuracy. Use precise reporting language for survey data, such as “the proportion of residents who visited a café,” and vary verbs with “recorded,” “accounted for” or “was highest in.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response uses several simple sentence forms that are generally understandable, such as “There is a comparison of people of Australian cities.” It also attempts a relative clause in the opening sentence. However, the range is narrow, and errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns are noticeable. For example, “people which are living” uses an unsuitable relative pronoun and an unnecessarily progressive form; “In Melbourne mostly people went” has awkward word order; and “attracted to bought” does not form a grammatical verb pattern. The opening also contains a run-on structure after “paragraphs below.” Practise accurate comparative sentences and clauses, for example, “Hobart had the highest proportion of instant-coffee buyers, whereas Sydney had the lowest.”
