Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the three activities and make a relevant overall comparison, noting that café visits are generally high and Adelaide is low. However, the overview is not fully accurate: Melbourne has the highest café figure, but Hobart is almost as high, while Adelaide is lowest. The claim about “the most notable difference between hobart and sydney” is unclear and is not supported with a specific comparison. You report some fresh-coffee figures and correctly identify Brisbane and Adelaide as similar, but the instant-coffee account is incomplete: Hobart is highest, while Sydney—not Adelaide or Melbourne—is lowest. The café series is not described beyond the overview. Select the main highs and lows across all three categories and state them precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for fresh and instant coffee, so there is some organisation around the chart’s categories. However, progression is weakened by the overview’s long, loosely connected statements and by the absence of a paragraph describing café visits. Linking phrases such as “On one hand” and “On other hand” do not clearly express the relationships between the data, and “So basically” repeats information already given rather than advancing the summary. Some references are also difficult to follow, particularly “the most notable difference between hobart and sydney.” Use a concise overview followed by clearly grouped comparisons, and connect each comparison directly to the relevant cities and figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “highest figures,” “lowest” and “similar,” and the reader can generally identify the categories being discussed. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “proportion of habitant's,” “consumption rate” for buying coffee, and “a large trend.” “Hot beverages” is also too broad when the chart distinguishes fresh coffee, instant coffee and café visits. Spelling and capitalisation errors, including “australian,” “sydney” and “noticable,” further reduce control. Aim for precise reporting language such as “the percentage of residents who bought instant coffee” and use “rose,” “was higher” or “accounted for” only where appropriate to the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts at longer sentences, for example the sentence beginning “On one hand if we look at individuals,” but complex structures are often faulty or difficult to follow. The opening phrase “proportion of habitant's” lacks a clear grammatical construction, and “the Adelaide had the lowest” uses an unnecessary article and leaves the comparison incomplete. In “residents who bought instant Hot beverages … have a large trend,” the subject and verb do not form a clear sentence. Commas and spaces are also inconsistently handled, especially after introductory phrases. Practise building accurate comparison sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “Hobart had the highest proportion of instant-coffee buyers, at about 55%.”
