Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and include an overview, noting café visits are high in Melbourne and Hobart and that instant coffee is popular in Hobart. You also report several relevant figures. However, the overview is not fully accurate: Hobart, rather than Melbourne, has the highest café figure, though the two are close, and Sydney does not lead fresh-coffee purchases; its rate is below Melbourne’s. Some comparisons are incomplete or unclear, especially Adelaide, for which you give no figures, and the claim that Brisbane and Hobart had the same instant-coffee rate is incorrect. Select the main highs and lows accurately, then support them with clear comparisons across all five cities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and body paragraphs that group city data. Phrases such as “To begin with” and “This city” help signal movement between points. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the first body paragraph moves from Melbourne to Hobart and then Brisbane, while the next returns to Sydney and ends abruptly with Adelaide. Some links are confusing, particularly “Brisbane and Hobart had remained same ratio” and “bought both coffee at stand.” Organise the details in a consistent pattern—for example, compare café visits first, then fresh and instant coffee—and use clear references so readers can follow each comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “rate,” “purchasing,” and “instant coffee,” and you attempt to vary expressions for people and activities. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, as in “rate of went to a cafe,” “higher rate to bought,” and “bought both coffee at stand.” These phrases make some comparisons difficult to interpret. There are also spelling errors, including “drinkimg,” “reprented,” and “wnet.” Use standard chart language such as “the proportion of residents who visited a café” and “the percentage who bought instant coffee,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer comparative sentences, but control is inconsistent, and many sentences contain errors that make the relationships between figures unclear. Examples include “Melbourne and Hobart both cities had been highest rate” and “which was accounted by 64%,” where sentence structure and verb forms are faulty. Articles and plural forms are also often missing or incorrect, as in “went to cafe” and “a instant coffee.” The final sentence about Adelaide lacks a clear comparison structure. Practise building accurate patterns such as “The proportion of residents who visited a café was highest in Hobart” and “Adelaide’s instant-coffee figure exceeded its café figure.”
