Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You report the three categories across all five cities and include several broadly accurate figures, such as café visits being above 60% in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart, and fresh-coffee purchases being lower in Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because it lacks a clear, data-led overview of the main patterns. The claim that a “majority” bought instant rather than fresh coffee is too broad: instant coffee is higher in every city, but none of its figures exceeds 55%. The opening also mistakenly refers to a table and separate charts, and describes tea purchases even though the chart shows café visits for coffee or tea. Focus the overview on the strongest comparisons and describe the displayed measures precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows a recognisable city-by-city order, moving from Sydney through to Hobart, and uses basic sequencing words such as “second,” “next” and “last.” This gives the reader some structure. However, the progression is repetitive rather than organised around the chart’s main patterns, and the overview is unclear: “here are the table and charts show” does not establish a coherent summary. The long paragraph combines all the city details, while the opening repeats the task wording instead of introducing a useful overview. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and grouped comparisons, for example, comparing café attendance across cities before discussing coffee purchases. Check that linking phrases connect complete, clearly related ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to identify the main categories, including “fresh coffee,” “instant coffee,” “percentage” and “cafe,” and readers can generally understand which figures you mean. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or repetitive. “Buy coffee or tea from each country” misrepresents the city-based survey, while “how much people buying” is not a natural way to describe percentages. Spelling errors such as “relevent,” “arround,” “cofee” and “intead” also reduce accuracy. Aim for concise chart language and vary the reporting verbs: for example, say residents “visited a café” or “purchased instant coffee,” and use “proportion” or “share” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences joined with “and,” and the city-by-city details are often understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction, agreement, articles and verb forms. For example, “This chart illustrate” needs subject–verb agreement, while “the table and charts show the how much people buying” has faulty structure and an unnecessary article. Several sentences run together without reliable punctuation, particularly the long account of the five cities. Practise forming accurate comparison sentences, such as “In Sydney, 61% visited a café, compared with about 45% who bought either type of coffee.” Use full stops to separate each city or comparison.
