Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The opening identifies the chart’s subject and the overview attempts to highlight the main pattern: café visits are highest in each city, while fresh-coffee purchases are generally lower. However, the response stops before reporting any city-by-city figures or meaningful comparisons, so the task is addressed only minimally. The claim that fresh coffee is the lowest in every city is also inaccurate: in Sydney, fresh-coffee purchases (44%) are slightly below instant coffee (45.5%), but in the other cities café visits are highest and fresh coffee is indeed the lowest. The response is 71 words, below the required 150. To develop the report, complete the comparisons across all five cities and include key figures and an overview of the highest and lowest results.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt at organisation: a brief introduction is followed by an overview, and “Overall” signals a shift to the main features. However, the response ends with an unfinished sentence—“in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and”—so there is no completed body paragraph or logical progression through the data. The reader is left without the comparisons promised by this sentence. Cohesion is therefore limited, despite the use of a simple linking marker. Complete the final thought, group the information into clear paragraphs, and use references such as “these figures” or “by contrast” to connect comparisons between cities and categories.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “survey,” “cities,” “coffee,” “tea,” and “bought fresh coffee,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the vocabulary is repetitive and some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “constrains the lowest” and “in majority.” “Result of survey” also needs a more natural expression, and “cafe” is better rendered as “café” in this context. The limited range makes it difficult to describe differences precisely. Build a bank of chart language for proportions and comparisons, such as “accounted for,” “was the most popular,” “exceeded,” and “approximately,” and use accurate collocations when describing the categories.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response shows an attempt to form both a complex opening sentence and an overview, but grammatical control is uneven. In “the result of survey,” the article is missing; “five australian cities” also needs correct capitalisation, and “individual's” does not agree naturally with the plural idea of residents. The phrase “in last 4 weeks” lacks an article, while the final sentence is incomplete and cannot function as a complete clause. These errors make parts of the short response awkward or unclear. Practise accurate article use and plural agreement, and check that every sentence has a complete main clause. A wider range of correctly controlled sentence patterns would also help.
