Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main pattern that café visits lead in four cities, while instant coffee is highest in Adelaide, and you cover all five locations. Several figures are close to the chart, such as café visits in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Hobart. However, some comparisons are inaccurate: Sydney fresh coffee is about 44%, not 48%, and Melbourne instant coffee is about 49%, not 43%; Adelaide café visits are about 50%, not 39%. The overview also says fresh coffee is last in Sydney, although instant coffee is slightly higher, and it does not clearly summarise the overall contrast between café visits and instant-coffee purchases. More accurate figures and a concise overview of the main trends would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an opening and overview are followed by city-by-city details, so the reader can see how the information is organised. The repeated pattern of naming café visits, instant coffee and fresh coffee also helps keep each city’s figures together. However, progression is limited because the report moves through cities without grouping or comparing related results, and connectors such as “meanwhile” are repeated rather mechanically. Some sentences are difficult to follow because several figures and claims are packed together, while phrases such as “occupies middle position” do not make the comparison clear. Use clearer paragraphing and link cities with similar or contrasting patterns to create a more logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “highest,” “least” and “consumption,” and the reader can generally identify the three activities being compared. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repeated or do not fit the chart naturally. For example, “people went to caffee for tea” is an awkward way to describe café visits for coffee or tea, while “occupies middle position” and “have last position” are imprecise. Spelling errors such as “Sydeny,” “caffee,” “cffee” and “consumpion” are noticeable and sometimes make reading harder. Build a more accurate set of reporting phrases, such as “accounted for,” “was the most popular” and “stood at,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, particularly in subject–verb agreement and sentence construction. Examples include “The bar graph below illustrate” and “fresh coffee bought have least position”; these need forms such as “illustrates” and “fresh coffee purchases were the lowest.” Articles and prepositions are also often missing or misplaced, as in “went to caffee” and “in last 4 weeks.” Several clauses are joined with “meanwhile” without a clear grammatical relationship, and spacing before punctuation is inconsistent. Practise accurate basic sentence patterns first, then use a wider range of complex structures while checking agreement, articles and clause links.
