Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and include several relevant comparisons, such as café visits being about 61% in Sydney and fresh-coffee purchases being similar in Brisbane and Adelaide. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: Melbourne is not the highest overall, since Hobart has the highest instant-coffee figure and Melbourne has the highest café figure only marginally above Hobart. Adelaide is not simply the minimum across the chart. Some details are also missing or imprecise, and “fresh coffee is lowest” in Hobart is incorrect; Brisbane and Adelaide are lower. The response is 142 words, below the required 150. Develop a clear overview of the main patterns and report the comparisons accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and two body sections, with a generally understandable movement from Sydney to other cities. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “To begin with,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships. However, the progression is not consistently logical: the discussion jumps between cities and categories, and the overview’s claim about the highest and lowest proportions does not prepare the reader for the details. Some links are also awkward or unclear, particularly “whereas the instant and went to a cafe … fluctuate,” which does not specify what is being compared. Group the cities or categories systematically and use transitions to show precise comparisons rather than relying on a sequence of connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “approximately,” “followed by,” and “purchase,” so the reader can usually identify the chart categories. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts difficult to interpret. For example, “the proportion of Melbourne is maximum” is not a natural way to describe the data, and “fresh coffee purchase” and “instant brought” are awkward. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Austriala,” “Sydeny,” “flactuate,” and “percen.” Use precise chart language such as “the percentage of residents,” “bought instant coffee,” and “visited a café,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with contrast, as in “However, in Brisbane and Adelaide…” This shows some effort to vary sentence forms, and the main topic is generally recoverable. However, grammatical errors occur frequently and sometimes make relationships unclear. The opening lacks subject–verb agreement (“The bar chart illustrate”) and has an incomplete construction (“in Sydney went to a coffee shop is highest”). Articles and sentence structure are also problematic in “the fresh coffee purchase by 42 percent,” while the overview “the proportion of Melbourne is maximum” is not grammatically well formed. Aim for complete subject–verb sentences, for example, “The proportion of residents who visited a café was highest in Melbourne,” and check agreement, articles, and punctuation.
