Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrate the comparison between the current layout of the Central public library and how it was twenty years ago.
Overall, the public library has undergone a major transformation, with entrance being the only feature that has remained same. While modern facilities are introduced such as cafe, computer room and self-service machines. These changes suggests a shift from purely reading-oriented space to more multifunctional and user-friendly space.
Twenty years ago, at the north west of the library, there was a room exclusively for Cds, videos and computer games, and now it is replaced by the Children's fiction books shared with sitting space. Entrance remained the same, but centre hall where there were tables and chairs, are removed now, making it more spacious. Reading room was located at the south west, and just below that was corridor for adult fiction books, and is currently been used as computer room and corridor place is filled with all reference books.
Children's book room was designated at the north east of the floor and below that was Adult non-fiction books, and is replaced by the lecture room and corridor with adult fiction books, information desk and self service machines. Cafe has been developed, replacing enquiry desks (tickets, book returns, etc) at the south east of the floor.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You give a clear overview of the main transformation, noting that the entrance is unchanged and that the library now includes facilities such as a café, computer room and self-service machines. Most locations and replacements are accurately reported, including the former media room becoming a children’s fiction/storytelling area and the former enquiry-desk area becoming a café. This covers the task well, with relevant comparisons. However, some details are unclear or imprecise: the adult fiction area is described as a “corridor,” although it is an open section, and the former reading room is not explicitly linked to the current computer room. The overview also says the entrance is the only feature retained, which is a broad claim that could be expressed more carefully. More precise descriptions of these changes would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing changes across the left and right sides of the plan. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the information, and phrases such as “Twenty years ago” and “now” help establish the comparison. However, some connections between locations and their new uses are difficult to follow, particularly in “Reading room was located at the south west, and just below that was corridor for adult fiction books, and is currently been used as computer room.” The final paragraph also combines several changes in a long sentence, making the sequence less clear. Use shorter, more controlled comparisons and consistent location-based grouping to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a library plan, including “undergone a major transformation,” “designated,” “replaced” and “multifunctional.” These choices help communicate the broad changes and show some flexibility beyond basic location words. There are, however, several imprecise or awkward expressions: “corridor place” does not clearly describe an open book area, and “shared with sitting space” is less natural than a direct description of the sofas. “Entrance” and “room” are also repeated frequently, while “Cds” and “self service” need standard spelling and hyphenation. More precise terms for areas and facilities, alongside accurate collocations, would make the description more fluent and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “While” and clauses describing how rooms have changed. The main meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “While modern facilities are introduced…” is a sentence fragment, and “These changes suggests” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “Entrance remained the same, but centre hall where there were tables and chairs, are removed now,” the article, clause structure and verb agreement are not controlled. The phrase “is currently been used” also has an incorrect verb form. Aim to make each sentence complete, check singular/plural agreement, and use consistent past and present forms when comparing the two plans.
