The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two diagrams illustrate the floor plan of a public library. One shows the library 20 years ago and the other how it looks today.
The biggest simularity is that the building it self with its rooms has not changed. However, what the rooms are beeing used for is quite different compared to 20 years ago. It seems like the library has transformed into an more social place.
20 years ago the library only had a reading room and Tables with chairs in the middle of the building, for people to sit down and spende there time together. The rest of the house was for Children books, adult fiction and non-fiction books, CDs, videos and computer games.
This has changed a lot since than. Where 20 years ago the children books had there own room, today they share the room with sofas and space for storytelling events. Instead of an reading room we now have a computer room and a new cafe apeared aswell. While there are still rooms for books in the libraray today, there is no enquiry desk anymore. However, the building has Self-service machines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main overall change: the building’s layout is largely retained, while its uses have become more varied and social. You also make relevant comparisons, such as the former reading room becoming a computer room and the children’s area gaining storytelling space. However, coverage is selective and some important changes are omitted: the former CDs/videos room becomes a children’s fiction and storytelling room, the lecture room is new, and the reference-book area and adult-fiction section are reorganised. The claim that the building itself and its rooms have not changed is too broad, since the room functions and some arrangements clearly have. Develop the overview more precisely and report a fuller range of the main changes to make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a description of the earlier plan, and a comparison with the present. This gives the reader a coherent route through the information. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Instead of,” and “While” help signal contrast, and the final paragraph brings several changes together. To make the progression more effective, organise the details by corresponding areas or by major changes, rather than moving between rooms without a consistent spatial pattern. Some references are also broad: “This has changed a lot” does not specify which features are being discussed, and “the rest of the house” is less precise than “the remaining areas of the library.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a library plan, including “reading room,” “adult fiction,” “non-fiction,” “storytelling events,” and “self-service machines.” Phrases such as “transformed into a more social place” also communicate an overall interpretation. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or informal choices limit accuracy and flexibility: “simularity,” “spende,” “apeared,” and “house” for a public library. Some expressions are awkward, including “the biggest similarity” when describing what remains unchanged and “share the room with sofas.” Use accurate plan-related terms and check spelling carefully; more precise wording would make the comparisons clearer and more appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including contrast clauses such as “While there are still rooms for books …” and a relative clause in “the room with sofas and space for storytelling events.” Most ideas remain understandable, but errors in articles, verb forms, and sentence construction recur. For example, “an more social place” should be “a more social place,” and “Where 20 years ago the children books had there own room” is an incomplete and awkwardly formed clause. “Instead of an reading room” also has an article error, while “the building it self with its rooms has not changed” has an unclear grammatical structure. Practise accurate complex comparisons and proofread articles, possessives, and clause boundaries.
