Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Two maps show the evolution of a central library's area allocation along with its different section and how they changed from their 20 years ago formation.
Overall, it is clear that nothing much remained of how the central library was arranged 20 years back and that new section have been created and others removed.
In fact, a list of a few section are no longer existent such as the enquiry desk, the middle room tables and chairs and the CDs and videos section. Instead of those removed section, new ones made their entrance to the library. For instance, Self-service machines and an information desk have been added next to the adult fiction books which was the adult non fiction books. Moreover, the Enquiry desk section was replaced with a café place and its round edge replaced with an angular one. Furthermore, the CDs, videos and computer games section was replaced with the computer room and allocated the south west previous reading room leaving the top left corner. Which then was enlarged at the expense of the previously adult fiction books which changed to all reference books. That space is now serving as the children's fiction books and the storytelling events area. Additionally, two sofas were installed one in the top left corner and the other Infront of the entrance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers the main features of the floor plan changes well. You successfully identified the removal of certain sections and the addition of new ones, such as the café and self-service machines. However, the description of the spatial changes is occasionally confusing, particularly when describing the movement of the computer room and the children's area. To improve, ensure that your spatial references (e.g., 'south-west', 'top left') are precise and clearly linked to the original layout. While you have summarized the information, a more structured approach—perhaps grouping changes by area or type—would help the reader follow the transformation more easily.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. While the progression of ideas is generally logical, the transition between sentences can be a bit mechanical. For example, the phrase 'Which then was enlarged...' is a sentence fragment that disrupts the flow. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices beyond simple connectors like 'Moreover' and 'Additionally' would improve the coherence. Paragraphing is present, but the body paragraph is quite dense; splitting it into two distinct sections—one for removals and one for additions—would enhance readability and logical flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'evolution', 'allocation', and 'existent'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'made their entrance to the library' (better: 'were introduced') and 'café place' (better: 'café area'). There are also minor errors in pluralization, such as 'new section' instead of 'new sections'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for describing spatial changes and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement with plural nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'new section have been created' (subject-verb agreement) and 'a list of a few section are no longer existent' (should be 'sections'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the sentence fragment starting with 'Which then was enlarged'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic agreement and sentence completeness will significantly improve your accuracy.
