Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While you have identified some main features, such as the removal of tables and the repurposing of rooms, the description is incomplete. You have missed several key details, such as the addition of the cafe, the relocation of the enquiry desk, and the specific changes to the entrance and reading areas. To improve, ensure you provide a comprehensive overview of all major changes depicted in the diagrams. The lack of sufficient detail and the failure to meet the length requirement prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into short paragraphs, which helps with readability. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'First', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' to link ideas. However, the progression of information is somewhat disjointed, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the description of the Adult non-fiction room. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the comparison of the two floor plans.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You rely on simple descriptors like 'changed' and 'removed'. Phrases such as 'left top corner room' are functional but not sophisticated. There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'it changed their name into'. To improve, incorporate more specific vocabulary related to floor plans and spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'converted', 'partitioned', or 'replaced'. Expanding your range of descriptive language will help you convey the changes more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('there is four rooms'), incorrect verb forms ('tables and chairs removed'), and punctuation issues. The sentence 'it divided into two section' is grammatically incorrect and lacks a subject-verb agreement. While the meaning is generally understandable, these frequent errors hinder the flow of the writing. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles. Practising complex sentences will also help you demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
