Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 7.0)
This map shows the changes made in the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and now.
Overall analysis shows that seating, children's books and storytelling events have shifted to a single room, while a cafe and self-service machines have been added for the convenience of readers.
Central library 20 years ago was more open, as tables and chairs were placed in the middle compared to now where they have been replaced by sofas in the top left room. The upper right room had children's books which have now been moved to the same room in which the sofas have been placed as well. That room has been made to a lecture room. CDs, videos, computer games have been shifted below to the previously reading room. Information desk has been established at the right side along with self-service machines and adult non-fiction books whose location has remained unchanged. The place where inquiry desk used to be has been made to a cafe for a quick bite for readers.
In conclusion the library has been made consolidated as compared to 20 years ago. More sections have been added and some have been removed to make space.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the library floor plan and provided a clear overview of the changes. You covered the relocation of various sections, such as the children's books and the introduction of the cafe and self-service machines. However, the description of the layout changes is slightly confusing in places, particularly when describing the movement of items between rooms. To improve, ensure that your spatial descriptions (e.g., 'top left room', 'below') are precise and easy for the reader to follow. You have met the requirements of the task by summarizing the key information effectively and making relevant comparisons between the two time periods.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'while', 'as', and 'compared to', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing of specific rooms could be more explicit to avoid ambiguity. For instance, referring to 'that room' requires the reader to look back to identify which room you mean. Using more varied linking phrases would help improve the overall progression of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consolidated', 'convenience', and 'established' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'made to a lecture room' (should be 'converted into') and 'shifted below' (which is slightly vague). While you successfully convey the meaning, incorporating more precise academic vocabulary related to spatial changes—such as 'relocated', 'transformed', or 'partitioned'—would elevate your score. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly without any significant errors that impede understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the library has been made consolidated' (should be 'the library has been consolidated') and 'made to a cafe' (should be 'converted into a cafe'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor issues with preposition usage and verb forms. To reach a higher band, focus on using more complex structures with greater accuracy and ensuring that your verb phrases are idiomatic and grammatically sound.
