Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The maps compare the development of a floor situated in a public library since 2006.

Overall, the area has undergone significant redevelopment, with several new amenities such as a cafe, a computer room, etc being introduced, while a number of older sections have been removed or replaced. Meanwhile, the entrance door has remained unchanged.

Before two decades, tables and chairs were centrally located within the area which has been completely demolished. The enquiry desk where individuals can ask for tickets, book return, etc was situated in the southeastern corner of the map whereas a room for reading newspaper and magazines occupied the southwestern corner of the area. Adult fiction and non-fiction books were accessible in the western and eastern part of the area, respectively. Children's book were available in the northeastern site, meanwhile the room consisting computer games, videos and CDs was located opposite to the children's books.'

At present, the enquiry desk has been replaced by a cafe with three self-serving machines being added adjacent to it. A computer room lies to the west of the entrance gate, above it reference books for all categories is available. Children's fiction book has been shifted in the northwestern area of the map with addition of couple of sofa, a lecture room has been constructed opposite to it. Information desk and adult fiction books occupied the eastern side of the site.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the floor plan and provided a clear comparison between the two time periods. You covered all the key changes, such as the introduction of the cafe and the relocation of the book sections. To reach a higher band, ensure that your overview is more comprehensive; while you mentioned the cafe and computer room, you could also highlight the general shift from a more traditional layout to a more modern, technology-focused space. Additionally, avoid informal abbreviations like 'etc' in academic writing, as it detracts from the formal tone required for Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organised, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the past and present states. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'whereas', 'meanwhile', and 'at present'. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the description of the past layout and the present layout is functional but could be more sophisticated. Ensure that referencing is always precise; at times, the connection between the location of items and the overall map layout is slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'amenities', 'demolished', and 'adjacent'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'Before two decades' (which should be 'Twenty years ago') and 'opposite to the children's books' (where 'opposite' is sufficient without 'to'). You also use 'etc' which is inappropriate for this task. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and avoid informal abbreviations to maintain a professional, academic tone throughout the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Children's book were available' (should be plural 'books') and 'reference books for all categories is available' (should be 'are'). Additionally, 'with addition of couple of sofa' lacks necessary articles ('a couple of sofas'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to enhance your accuracy.
