Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the floor plan, identifying key changes such as the addition of the cafe and the relocation of the adult fiction section. However, the overview is weak; it lacks a clear summary of the most significant transformations. While the response identifies specific changes, it struggles to synthesize the information effectively, leading to a somewhat fragmented description. The comparison between the two time periods is present but could be more analytical. To improve, ensure the overview highlights the most striking changes rather than just listing individual modifications, and ensure all spatial references are precise to help the reader visualize the layout changes clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of information. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, phrases like 'To begin with' and 'To sum up' are used, but the internal linking between sentences is often disjointed. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'from now, it replaced with', which makes the flow of information awkward. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would significantly enhance the logical flow and coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There is some repetition of basic verbs like 'replaced' and 'removed'. The student attempts to describe the layout, but some word choices are unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'launched new necessity things for minors'. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to use more precise terminology related to floor plans and spatial changes, such as 'converted into', 'relocated', 'transformed', or 'designated for'. Expanding the range of descriptive adjectives and nouns would also help in providing a more sophisticated summary of the library's evolution.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles ('added cafe'), incorrect verb tenses ('central library develops'), and awkward phrasing ('bur today that is removed'). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are also inconsistent. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction, ensuring correct article usage, and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would lead to more accurate and professional-sounding sentences.
