Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given maps illustrate how the central library changed in the timespan of 20 years and shows the library's current state.

Overall, the central library got modernized and more space was created in the middle of library which was traditionally occupied by large tables and number of chairs. All the rooms in the library got refashioned to keep up with the current demands.

In the south-east side of the central library there used to be a reading room for newspapers and magazines which got repurposed to a computer room. In the west section of the library adult fiction books were kept and now all the reference books are kept in the east section. Towards the north-east side of the library, The media room was expanded to a children's room where children's fiction books are kept and sofas are added to sit along with storytelling events which are held in the room.

Tables and chairs were removed from the middle and the library is more spacious now. The enquiry desk at the right of the entrance was changed to a cafe and east section got divided into 3 parts; Adult fiction books section, information desk and self-service machine. The children's book room transitioned to a lecture room.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the floor plan changes. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the modernization of the library and the removal of central tables. However, the report could be improved by ensuring more precise comparisons. For instance, when mentioning the relocation of adult fiction and reference books, the description is slightly confusing regarding the exact current layout. While you highlight the main changes, a more structured approach to grouping the information (e.g., by area or by type of change) would help the reader follow the transformation more clearly. Overall, you have addressed the task requirements well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the changes. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In the south-east side' and 'Towards the north-east side', to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas could be smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and the use of cohesive devices is occasionally mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernized', 'refashioned', 'repurposed', and 'transitioned'. These words are appropriate for describing changes in a floor plan. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'number of chairs' (should be 'a number of chairs') and 'in the timespan of 20 years' (better as 'over a 20-year period'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, incorporating more precise descriptive language would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('at the right of the entrance' should be 'at the right of the entrance' or 'on the right'), and some awkward phrasing like 'the library is more spacious now'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are instances where sentence structure could be more sophisticated. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these errors occur frequently throughout the text.
