Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram presents that how the floor plan of a public library is changed from 20 years ago to now.

Overall, library underwent several changes. Almost each and everything is developed and changed to the new facilities except the main entrance.

20 years ago, the center library had CDs, videos and computer games on the northeast side, while reading room (magazines and newspapers) was in the southeast area, between them there is an area for adult fiction books. In comparison, adult non-fiction books were between the children's books room (which is on the northwest side) and enquiry desks (tickets, book returns etc) was on the the southwest area. In the center, tables and chairs were presented.

Today, the central library saw major changes and is renewed. The children's books room and the reading room are replaced by lecture room and computer room, respectively. The room (CDs,videos and games) is now replaced by the room contains storytelling events, two sofas and children's fiction books. Enquiry desks is demolished, cafe is built on that site. The center is empty now and the adult books is transferred and replaced by all reference books. Meanwhile, some facilities are added with adult fiction's books such as self surface machines and an information desk.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the floor plan, including the major structural changes and the relocation of specific facilities. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the demolition of the enquiry desks and the introduction of a cafe. However, the description of the layout is occasionally imprecise. For example, stating that 'almost each and everything is developed' is a vague generalisation that lacks the analytical precision required for a Band 7. To improve, ensure that you clearly contrast the 'before' and 'after' states with more specific spatial references, as some descriptions of location are slightly confusing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In comparison', 'Today', and 'Meanwhile' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'between them there is an area'. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the transition between the description of the past and the present could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would help elevate the score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demolished', 'renewed', and 'transferred'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'self surface machines' (likely meaning self-service machines) and 'the room contains storytelling events'. These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the precision of your description. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated collocations related to describing changes in diagrams, such as 'underwent a transformation' or 'was converted into'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the center library', 'the room contains') and subject-verb agreement ('adult books is transferred'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'The diagram presents that how the floor plan... is changed'. To improve, focus on consistent use of articles and ensuring that your verb tenses accurately reflect the timeline (past for the old plan, present for the current one).
