Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram depicts that how the floor plan of a public library is changed from 20 years ago to now.

Overall, the library underwent several changes. Almost each and everything is developed and changed to the new facilities except the main entrance.

20 years ago, the central library had CDs, videos and computer games on the northeast side, while reading room (magazines and newspapers) was in the southeast area, between them there is an area for adult fiction books. In comparison, adult non-fiction books were between the children's books room (which is on the northwest side) and enquiry desks (tickets, book returns etc) was on the southwest area. In the center, tables and chairs were presented.

Today, the central library saw major changes and is renewed. The children's books room and the reading room are replaced by lecture room and computer room, respectively. The room (CDs,videos and games) is now replaced by the room contains storytelling events, two sofas and children's fiction books. Enquiry desks is demolished, cafe is built on that site. The center is empty now and the adult books are transferred and replaced by all reference books. Meanwhile, some facilities are added with adult fiction's books such as self surface machines and an information desk.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers the main features of the floor plan changes effectively. You have successfully identified the key transformations, such as the replacement of the children's room and the addition of the cafe. However, the overview is slightly simplistic; stating 'almost each and everything is developed' is a vague generalization. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview highlights the most significant structural shifts rather than just stating that changes occurred. The comparison between the two time periods is clear, and the information is accurately reported, meeting the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of information is generally smooth, moving from the past layout to the current one. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In comparison' and 'Meanwhile', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the changes more thematically rather than just listing them. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences, such as 'The room (CDs, videos and games) is now replaced by the room contains...', lack necessary connecting words to flow naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demolished', 'renewed', and 'transferred'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'self surface machines' is likely a misinterpretation of 'self-service machines', and 'the room contains storytelling events' is grammatically awkward. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for describing floor plans and ensure that your collocations are natural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'The diagram depicts that how the floor plan... is changed' (incorrect clause structure), 'Enquiry desks is demolished' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'adult fiction's books' (incorrect possessive usage). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
