Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the changes in the library floor plan, but it struggles to accurately convey the information. While the main features are mentioned, the descriptions of locations are often confusing or incorrect (e.g., 'east-west' is not a standard directional term, and the description of the entrance is unclear). The summary of the overall changes is vague and contains inaccuracies, such as stating that the entrance was 'surpassed'. The response lacks a clear, logical overview of the most significant changes, which is a requirement for a high score in Task 1. The information provided is often difficult to follow, making it hard for the reader to visualize the changes described.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is frequently disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inappropriate, such as the repetitive use of 'located' and 'was'. Referencing is often unclear, making it difficult to track which part of the library is being discussed. For example, the transition between the past and present descriptions is abrupt, and the lack of clear linking words between sentences hinders the flow of information. The paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related information, leading to a fragmented reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. There are several instances of word-choice errors that impede clarity, such as 'equiry' (likely meant 'enquiry'), 'demolished' (used incorrectly for furniture), and 'exceed' (used incorrectly to describe the entrance). The student relies on basic descriptive language and struggles to use precise terminology for spatial descriptions. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of variety and the frequent misuse of words prevent the response from reaching a higher band. More precise terms for describing layout changes, such as 'relocated', 'converted', or 'expanded', are missing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often affect the clarity of the message. There are issues with sentence structure, such as 'it's significantly changes were involved' and 'the reading room was transformed into the computer room constantly'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent (e.g., 'in north-west corner'). The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with some attempts at passive voice, which are often executed incorrectly. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces and incorrect capitalization. These errors are frequent and occasionally make the text difficult to interpret.
