Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the changes and developments in central library over the 20 year period.

Overall, a number of modifactions are made in central library, mainly involving, sofa, lecture room, cafe, and computer room . It is also noticeable that there is no plan to change in the entrance.

In terms of changes, the items which located in left side of the previous plan are demolised, and new items are included in the same place. The new items are storytelling books, all reference books and computer room. However, two new sofas are included in north west side in the new plan. In contrast, tables and chares located in the centre are removed and this place is remained vacant in the current layout. But, entrance situated in the south corner is remained same.

For the remaining changes, children's books located in north east side is removed and replaced by lecture room. Similarly, enquiry desk situated in south east side is demolised and a cafe is added in it's place. Additionally, adult non-fiction books is removed from the north east side and replaced by adult fiction books, self-service machines and information desk.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the library floor plan changes well. You have successfully identified the key modifications, such as the removal of tables and the addition of the lecture room and cafe. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions the areas of change, it could be more descriptive of the overall trend, such as the shift from a study-focused layout to a more modern, multi-functional space. The description of the locations is generally accurate, though some details, such as the specific placement of the adult fiction books, could be more precise to ensure the reader can clearly visualize the transformation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the library's transformation. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In terms of', 'In contrast', and 'Similarly', which help guide the reader through the changes. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow; for instance, the phrase 'in it's place' is slightly awkward, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would help achieve a more natural and sophisticated flow throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'demolished', 'vacant', and 'layout' appropriately. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'modifactions', 'demolised', 'chares', and 'it's' (used instead of 'its'). These errors are noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider variety of precise vocabulary related to spatial changes and avoid repetitive phrasing. Focusing on accurate spelling and more sophisticated collocations will significantly improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'the items which located', 'children's books... is removed', 'adult non-fiction books is removed'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'mainly involving'. While these errors rarely impede communication, they indicate a lack of control over complex structures. Increasing your focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor grammatical slips will help improve your accuracy.
