Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagrams illustrate the layout of the Central Library 20 years ago and at present.

Overall, the central library underwent many significant changes. The enquiry desk was replaced by a cafe. In addition, the reading room was converted into a computer room, while tables and chairs in the center of the library were removed and sofas were added to the children's fiction books area.

An analysis of the image reveals that the northwest side of the library, which previously contained CDs, videos and computer games, was replaced by an area for storytelling events and children's fiction books, with two sofas. Moreover, the adult fiction books were replaced by reference books. Just below this area, the reading room which contained newspapers and magazines, was converted into a computer room.

From the image, it is evident that the northeast side of the library contained the children's books section which has now been replaced by a lecture room. In addition, the adult non-fiction books were replaced by adult fiction books with an information desk and three self-service machines. Furthermore, the enquiry desk, where people could book tickets, and return books were replaced by a cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the library floor plan and provided a clear comparison between the two time periods. The overview effectively highlights the most significant changes, such as the conversion of the reading room and the addition of the cafe. You have covered all areas of the diagram, including the relocation of book sections and the introduction of new facilities like the lecture room and self-service machines. To reach a higher band, ensure that all spatial descriptions are precise; for example, specifying the exact location of the 'adult fiction' books in the current layout would improve clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a concise overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by location. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is easy to follow. To improve further, try to vary your cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a repetitive structure at the start of your sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'converted', 'replaced', and 'illustrate' appropriately. The language is precise enough to convey the necessary information clearly. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms for 'replaced' and 'contained' to avoid repetition. For instance, using 'transformed into' or 'was repurposed as' would add variety and show greater lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your writing shows a good control of grammatical structures, with a mix of simple and complex sentences. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You successfully use passive voice constructions, which are appropriate for describing changes in a floor plan. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more subordinate clauses to describe simultaneous changes in different parts of the library.
