Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates 20 years old blueprints of a library and the current plan after redevelopment.
Overall, the most significant changes can be seen in both plans. Every space is repurposed for a different use. The major structural changes include a chamfer wall of the reception into a straight wall.
In 20 years ago plan, the entrance was in the centre of the south wall, which remains at the same location in the current plan. While the reception, along with the foyer converted into a cafe. The adult non-fiction books area has an addition of an information desk and self-service machines. The children's books room at the north-east corner has been repurposed into a lecture room.
The reading room (newspapers and magazines) at the south-west has been redeveloped into a computer room with a change in location of its door. Ultimately, the CDs, video, and computer games area on the north-west side changed into a multipurpose room for storytelling events and children's fiction book spot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the library floor plan and made relevant comparisons between the two time periods. You covered the key structural changes, such as the reception area and the repurposing of specific rooms. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention that 'every space is repurposed,' a more effective overview would highlight the most significant trends, such as the shift from traditional book storage to more multipurpose and digital-focused spaces. Additionally, some descriptions, like 'chamfer wall,' are slightly inaccurate in their technical description. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location or function. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'While,' 'Ultimately,' and 'in the current plan,' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus. For instance, the transition between the reception area and the children's books room is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words would help the text feel more cohesive and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'repurposed,' 'redeveloped,' and 'multipurpose.' However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as '20 years old blueprints' (should be 'blueprints from 20 years ago') and 'children's fiction book spot' (which sounds informal). To reach a higher band, try to use more precise descriptive language for spatial changes, such as 'transformed into,' 'replaced by,' or 'underwent a complete renovation.' Your spelling is generally accurate, but the phrasing occasionally lacks the natural flow expected at higher levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'In 20 years ago plan' is grammatically incorrect (should be 'In the plan from 20 years ago'). Additionally, some sentences are fragments or lack proper verb agreement, such as 'While the reception, along with the foyer converted into a cafe' (this is a dependent clause without a main verb). Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence has a clear main clause will significantly improve your accuracy.
