Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided diagrams illustrate the layouts of a public library today and how it looked 20 years ago.
Overall, the library went through significant changes after the renovation. Multiple modern facilities and amenities have been installed now. One major change has been done by removing the tables and chairs from the center point of the library making it more spacious.
20 years ago, the library had computer zone at the top left corner, opposite to that was the children's book room, whereas adult fiction and non-fiction books section were just below them. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the library floor plan, including the key changes such as the removal of tables and the addition of a cafe and computer room. However, the response is incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence ('with many faciliti'). This prevents a full overview of the final state of the library. While the main trends are identified, the lack of a complete conclusion and the unfinished description of the children's section limit the development of the response. To reach a higher band, ensure all parts of the diagram are fully described and the summary is brought to a logical conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the past and present states. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'while', and 'opposite to that' are used to link ideas. However, the progression is interrupted by the incomplete final sentence, which disrupts the overall flow. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the description of the past and the present could be smoother to better highlight the comparative nature of the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'renovation', 'sophisticated', and 'amenities'. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'cafe installment' instead of 'cafe area' or 'cafe installation', and 'occupies fiction book only' which is unclear. The range is sufficient to convey the main points, but the lack of precision in describing the layout changes prevents a higher score. Expanding the range of descriptive verbs and nouns related to spatial changes would improve the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'opposite to that was the children's book room' (missing subject/article) and 'tables and chair' (should be plural). The sentence 'Adult non-fiction books section now occupies fiction book only' is grammatically confusing. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors and the incomplete final sentence indicate a lack of control over complex structures, keeping the score in the mid-range.
