Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrate how the layout of a public library has changed over past two decades.

Overall, the building has undergone significant redevelopment. Traditional reading areas have been reduced, while more space has been allocated to technology and community activities.

Twenty years ago, most of the library's floor area has devoted to books and reading. The main entrance was located at the bottom of the plan, leading directly to foyer, with two round tables and chairs in the center. An enquiry desk was located to the right of the main entrance, and a reading room for newspaper and magazines was located at the left of the entry point. There was a room on the right of the upper corner designated for children's book and one at the upper left for CDs, videos, and computer games. Adult fiction and non-fiction books were placed on either side of the central tables.

Since, the facility has witnessed extensive renovation. the main entrance has remained at the bottom of the plain only, but the enquiry desk has been converted into cafe, and reading room on the left of the main doorway has been replaced to computer room. The central seating area has been removed, creating a more open foyer. In addition, the previous children's room has been turned into a lecture room, and the area above the cafe now accommodates to information desk with three self-service machines. The room at upper left corner has now changed into storytelling room.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the library's transformation, such as the shift from book storage to technology and community spaces. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the floor plan. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise; for instance, you mention the 'area above the cafe' now accommodates an information desk, but clarifying the spatial relationship more explicitly would improve the clarity of your report. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that follow a chronological progression. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Since' to link ideas. However, the use of 'Since' at the start of the second paragraph is slightly awkward in this context; 'Since then' or 'Currently' would be more appropriate. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the past and present states, which helps the reader follow the development of the library layout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment,' 'allocated,' and 'witnessed extensive renovation.' There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'plain' instead of 'plan' and 'accommodates to' (accommodates an information desk). While you successfully convey the necessary information, incorporating a slightly wider variety of precise collocations related to spatial changes would elevate your score. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly without difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'The diagram illustrate' (should be 'illustrates'), 'has devoted' (should be 'was devoted'), and 'reading room... has been replaced to' (should be 'replaced by'). Additionally, there are some missing articles, such as 'converted into cafe' (should be 'a cafe'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of your report. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
