Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram illustrates the modifications made for the better experience of local people in central library over the two decades.

Overall, there are several modifications made in the public library for public welfare including cafe development, self-service machines, computer room, storytelling events and lecture room respectively.

To begin with, on the right half of the public library the circular sitting arrangements at the center has been moved and they have developed a lecture room in place of childrens books area at north-east direction. Also the enquiry desk has been relocated infront of it including self-service machines and adult fiction books section next to it. Moreover, a cafe has been constructed in south-east corner to devour the food.

On the other half side, the storytelling events with sofa seating arrangements are held in place of computer games room. Meanwhile, computer room is exact left to the entrance and local people can enjoy the reference book right next to it considerably.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the library's transformation. You covered the key changes, such as the addition of the cafe, the lecture room, and the relocation of various sections. However, the response lacks a clear, analytical overview of the most significant changes. While you mention 'several modifications', a more effective overview would highlight the shift from a traditional book-focused space to a more modern, technology-integrated facility. Additionally, some descriptions are slightly imprecise, such as 'infront of it', which makes it difficult for the reader to visualize the exact layout changes. To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive summary of the overall trend of the changes in the introduction or overview paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the description. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Also', and 'Meanwhile' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel forced. For example, the phrase 'respectively' in the second paragraph is used incorrectly as it does not correspond to a list of items previously mentioned. Furthermore, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'infront of it', where the antecedent is ambiguous. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to specific locations will enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modifications', 'relocated', and 'arrangements'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'devour the food' is inappropriate in a formal report; 'enjoy the reference book' is also slightly unnatural. Additionally, 'exact left to the entrance' should be 'to the immediate left of the entrance'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise, academic vocabulary and collocations that are appropriate for describing floor plans and spatial relationships, rather than relying on informal or slightly inaccurate phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is sufficient for this task. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'modifications made for the better experience of local people in central library' (missing articles) and 'childrens books area' (missing apostrophe). The phrase 'infront of it' should be two words ('in front of'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic articles (a/the), prepositions, and punctuation to improve the accuracy of your writing.
