Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates the floor layout of a public library two decades ago and its layout now. Overall, the library had undergone many drastic changes. The foyer of tables and chairs were removed. The reading room was replaced by the computer room and a cafe was set up in the place of enquiry desk. The computer games room was made into a children's room with kids fictional books. And the room with children's books was swapped with lecture room.
The old buliding had an entrance at the bottom. A reading room with newspapers and magazines on the left and an enquiry desk on the right. Moving up forward from the entrance there is a foyer of tables and chairs. Childrens books were set up on the top right corner of the buliding and CDs, videos and computer games room was on the top left corner. Adult fiction and non-fiction books were situated on the either side of the foyer.
The new layout also had the entrance at the bottom. Reading room was switched with a computer room. A a cafe was set up on the right side of the entrance in the place of the enquiry desk. The foyer was removed with all reference books and an information desk on the either side of the empty space. Children's books room was shifted from the top right corner to top left corner and a lecture room was a new addition to the top right corner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the floor plan changes. You have successfully identified the main shifts, such as the removal of the foyer and the relocation of the children's room and lecture room. However, the overview is slightly simplistic. While you mention 'drastic changes', a more effective overview would explicitly highlight the most significant structural transformations, such as the conversion of the reading room into a computer room and the addition of the cafe. The report is accurate and addresses the prompt well, though it could benefit from more precise comparisons between the two time periods to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into three paragraphs: an introduction/overview, a description of the past, and a description of the present. This structure is clear and easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moving up forward' and 'The new layout', to guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of information from the entrance to the back of the library is logical and consistent throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'foyer', 'enquiry desk', and 'layout' correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'kids fictional books' (should be 'children's fiction') and 'buliding' (spelling error). You also repeat certain phrases like 'top right corner' and 'bottom', which limits the sophistication of your writing. To improve, try to use more varied synonyms for spatial descriptions and ensure that you use precise terminology for library sections to enhance the professional tone of your report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'The foyer of tables and chairs were removed' (subject-verb agreement error: 'foyer' is singular) and 'A a cafe' (repetition). You also have some issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'on the either side' (should be 'on either side'). Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on eliminating these small slips and incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
