Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration illustrates a public library's floor design 20 years before and how it is looking today.
Overall, the changes occur on the different features such as books sections, desks, transforming the rooms, although the central space stayed the same, there are 4 rooms, each room designed has been changes now.
Twenty Years ago, the library had tables and chairs at the centre of the floor. On the right side from entrance we have enquiry desk, as we go on right side, there is adult non-fiction books section. afterwards there was a room for children's books. In front of that, there were a room related to CD's, videos and computer games. We we come down toward the entrances, we can see there was a section of adult fiction books. And on left side of entrance, there were a reading room.
Today, there is no any chair or table on the floor straight after entrance. On the right side, right after the main entrance, there is cafe. After that there are self-service machines, information desk and adult fiction books section in a line and then we have lecture room. In front of it, there is a room which contains sofas for storytelling events and a section for children's fiction books. After that toward entrance we can see all reference books sections. There is the computer room at the left corner near the entrance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the floor plan changes well. You have identified the key transformations, such as the addition of the cafe and the relocation of various sections. However, the overview is slightly weak; it lists features rather than synthesising the most significant trends, such as the shift from a study-focused space to a more multipurpose facility. While you have addressed all parts of the task, the description of the layout could be more precise in terms of spatial relationships. To improve, ensure your overview highlights the 'big picture' changes rather than just listing individual room modifications, and use more precise comparative language when describing the shift in locations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the past to the present. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'After that' and 'on the right side' are used frequently, which makes the flow feel a bit stilted. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and use more sophisticated referencing (e.g., 'This area was subsequently converted into...'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed, and better use of transition signals would improve the overall logical flow between the different sections of the library.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the floor plan, using terms like 'enquiry desk', 'self-service machines', and 'storytelling events'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'how it is looking today' (better: 'how it appears today') and 'no any chair' (better: 'no chairs'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive verbs and nouns related to spatial changes will help you convey information more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'each room designed has been changes now' (should be 'has been changed') and 'there were a room' (should be 'there was a room'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic errors in tense and number agreement. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as passive voice constructions to describe the changes (e.g., 'The area was transformed into...'), would also enhance your grammatical range.
